Salter refurbishes 58 of Aesop's fables with delicate flame-toned illustrations. Underscoring the timelessness and adaptability of the Greek storyteller's work, the British artist borrows motifs and styles from a number of the so-called cradles of civilization. In her full-page illustrations, slightly flattened perspectives recall antiquity, while the use of serial borders and of floral and geometric patterns seem specifically Middle Eastern. A fox and a stork pose with with a black-figure vase suggestive of pre-classical Athens; other pictures incorporate architectural flourishes (various types of capitals or arches) that evoke the style of an entire period. Small, color images interspersed with the text echo the facing illustrations; for spreads without full-page art, Salter produces stately framed miniatures...

Book Description
In all likelihood, Aesop was just as invented as his fantastic fables. Allegorical tales of birds and beasts, the fables are humorous, inspirational, and often astonishingly pragmatic. They expose the superstitions and customs of the Greeks, as well as their love of life and common sense. Perhaps the original treatise of self-help, Aesop’s Fables is full of advice for life,
whether it be affirming, silly, or profoundly insightful.

D. L. Ashliman is emeritus professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He taught folklore, mythology, German, and comparative literature at that institution for thirty-one years.
He has also served as guest professor at the University of Augsburg in Germany.

Using fabric collages, debut author/ artist Lynch stitches together a smorgasbord of fables into a colorful picture book quilt. He's rounded up a baker's dozen of the parables and presents them in a format that's short and sweetAone per double-spreadAeach ending with "So remember!" and a pithy moral. The succinct retellings and large type make them appropriate for an audience just beginning to read on their own. Many of the familiar fables contain easy-to-follow lessons, such as the fox and the thirsty goat ("Look before you leap"). However, the lessons of lesser-known parables may elude younger readersAsuch as the tale of Zeus refusing a wedding gift from a snake ("Never accept the offerings of a villain," when nothing in the tale suggests the snake's evil intentions) or the tale of a caged songbird and a bat...

From Publishers Weekly
Beautifully designed, this lush, oversize volume showcases Pinkney's (The Ugly Duckling) artistry in grand style. There's a king's ransom worth of material here, as Pinkney serves up more than 60 of the ancient Greek slave-philosopher's fables. Aesop's wisdom spills across the pages as freely as Pinkney's glorious watercolors, alight with the many creatures who people the tales, from fiddling grasshoppers and diligent ants to wily foxes, clever crows, brave mice and grateful lions. Each of the vigorous retellings concludes with the kind of succinct moral that centuries of readers have come to expect (e.g., "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched"; "You are judged by the company you keep"). And whether the homilies concern a wolf in sheep's clothing or sour grapes, the timeless virtues resonate as...
Disabled Fables: Aesop's Fables, Retold And Illustrated By Artists With Developmental Disabilities

From School Library Journal
Grade 1 Up–A compilation of fables retold and illustrated by adults with developmental disabilities, this volume has the potential to serve a number of different audiences. Individuals with disabilities and those who live, work, or go to school with them will find much to interest and inspire them. The writer/artists' interpretations of the tales range from startlingly original to confounding, but the ways in which they relate the stories to their own life experiences are often touching and illuminating. For The Fox and the Cat, an autistic young man explains that he relates to this story because it is difficult for him to make a decision. The book's artwork–rendered mostly in watercolor or felt-tip markers–is likewise variable, with the best of it displaying an arresting sense of...

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up-- No other collection of fables so clearly demonstrates the range of artists who have illustrated Aesop than this one. More than 50 fables are each accompanied by at least one illustration from nearly 30 works from Charles Henry Bennett's 1857 version to Edward Bawden's in 1970. The excellent introduction sums up Aesop's importance in literature, and discusses the gradual shift in the intended audience over the years, from adults to children and back to adults. Well-loved fables are included, but many of these will not be as familiar: "The Mountain in Labour," "The Rose and the Butterfly," and "The Ass and His Driver." Crisp, to-the-point tellings never detract from the main focus--the fantastic array of classic illustrations, reproduced from original editions in museums and private collections....

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1AMiles's introduction informs parents that "old stories" are good for new readers because of their use of familiar story lines and repetitive words. The author then uses these techniques in her retelling of this classic Aesop fable, using only dialogue, keeping the words to a minimum, and repeating certain phrases throughout. While the tale itself remains unchanged, this version has a modern bent to it, expressed primarily through the cartoon illustrations. All of the animals are dressed in colorful clothing, except for Tortoise, who wears nothing but his shell and a pair of sneakers. They all sport letters on their chests (Tortoise wears a 'T,' Hare an 'H,' and Bear a 'B") except for Fox, who has his whole name on his shirt. These cleverly placed clues will help children remember what...
The McElderry Book of Aesop's Fables
Author: Michael Morpurgo Book Review
Format: Hardcover
ISBN: 1416902902

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2–"One day in March, after a morning of carefree cavorting and capering with her friends on the hillside, Hare was haring her way home along a path when she came across Tortoise." Morpurgo is jocular and colloquial as he adds descriptive details and conversation in retelling 21 tales of the venerable Aesop. Accompanied by humorous watercolor scenes in varied sizes, some tales extend for several pages, while others are complete on two. The concluding lessons, set in larger type, tend to lack the pithiness of those in many older collections, though some are more economical than others. "Obstinacy may look like strength. It rarely is." The reteller seems undecided as to how deadly the fate of some characters should be–or at least how specifically it should be stated. In "The Rat...

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Kindergarten-Grade 3–In this handsome companion book to Teeth, Tails, and Tentacles (Running Pr, 2004), Wormell uses linocut prints to illuminate 21 of Aesop's famous life lessons. The artist cleverly conveys the morals up front and, in doing so, also provides viewers with a powerful exercise in visual literacy. Each spread consists of the fable's title and the large-type moral on the left and a full-page illustration on the right. The bold, black lines of the expertly rendered images and colorful accents primarily in earth tones create instantly recognizable figures. The subtle use of light and shadow adds clarity, expression, and often drama without extraneous detail. The brilliance of the images lies in their simplicity. The selections include many of the best-known fables as well as...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 5 - In an appealing format just right for small hands, this tiny volume presents 20 fables selected from Aesop, de la Fontaine, Don Juan Manuel, and others. Uribe's literary retellings, expertly translated by Ouriou, sacrifice none of the pithiness of fables but supply a leisurely beginning, motivation, and description unusual in the genre. For instance, the mouse who encounters a lion was "out walking, not paying attention to where he was going, and he accidentally walked right up over a lion taking a nap." The City Mouse and Country Mouse feast on "cheese from Holland, ham from Italy, white bread, almond cake and apple pie." A comprehensive note supplies information on Aesop, the origin of fables, and the genre itself. Bravo's elegant, framed and unframed vignettes are delightfully stylish...

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-5–Each of these eight fables is presented in a two-part format. The first part consists of a wordy introduction in which Aesop explains the meaning and possible context of the tale and relates it to his own life as a freed Athenian slave. Several of the selections, such as The Frogs That Wanted a King and The Jay and the Peacocks, are not often anthologized. Each telling contains descriptions of the setting, extensive dialogue, and rounded-out motivation. Unfortunately, the resulting long-windedness violates the pithiness of the genre. The Lion and the Mouse comes in at over eight pages. The preface makes clear what advice the ensuing selection will impart; the final paragraph of the narrative emphasizes the upcoming lesson, and a neatly framed moral is appended. This triple treatment leaves...

Book Description
The fables of Aesop have become one of the most enduring traditions of European culture, ever since they were first written down nearly two millennia ago. Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collections
of prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. First published in English by Caxton in 1484, the fables and their morals continue to charm modern readers: who does not know the story of the tortoise and the hare, or the boy who cried wolf?

This new translation is the first to represent all the main fable collections in ancient Latin and Greek, arranged according to the fables' contents and themes. It includes 600 fables, many of which come from sources never before translated into English....

Grade 7 Up–In 1645, England is plunged into a Civil War pitting Puritans against Royalists, and is swept by a craze of witch-hunting, targeting women who practice healing arts drawn from ancient lore. Hearn intertwines the stories of three girls in one village. Two are daughters of the new minister, a man who fulminates against the old pagan ways, and Nell, who is the granddaughter of the local cunning woman. Because the elderly woman is failing in mind and body, Nell must quickly learn her skills and lore, including midwifery to humans and fairies. Meanwhile Grace, the minister's beautiful elder daughter, pregnant by a lad who runs away to be a soldier, draws her sister Patience into a conspiracy to blame her condition on witchcraft practiced by Nell and her grandmother. Caught up in Grace's hysteria,...
