This British import is great fun, sure to entertain children and parents alike. The Jolly Postman goes from home to home in a fairy-tale kingdom, delivering letters to such familiar addresses as "Mr. and Mrs. Bear, Three Bears Cottage, The Woods." Every other page is an actual envelope, with a letter tucked inside. The letter to the three bears, for instance, is from Goldilocks, who apologizes for the trouble she's caused and invites Baby Bear to her birthday party. Some authors would stop with this cute concept, but the Ahlbergs have given this book their all. The story of the postman's travels is told in charming verse; the pictures are delightful, full of clever detail; and the results are frequently hilarious. (The wicked witch of "Hansel and Gretel" fame, for instance, receives a circular from Hobgoblin... |

What could be more appropriate? The Jolly Postman (1986)- -cycling past ``the fast-eloping dish and spoon,'' a giant beanstalk, and King Cole's castle--delivers holiday letters and gifts addressed to ``Mr. H. Dumpty, Wincey Ward, Cock Robin Memorial Hospital''; the Gingerbread boy; and even ``Mister Wolf,'' found ``wolfing pies and sherry'' and sporting amiably with three pigs and the little red hen. All is reported in deft, jovial verse; six bound-in envelopes contain amusing missives- -cards, a picture puzzle (Humpty Dumpty, of course), a tiny pamphlet of a book, a picture letter (Granny's sound advice to R. Hood), and--for the postman--an accordion-style peep show. The illustrations are as charming as the text--even the postmarks are fun. Pure delight. (Picture book. 2+) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus... |

In what amounts to both a primer and a catalogue of a schoolchild's "firsts," the Alhbergs have combined a pleasing design with salient bits of information, driven home by a band of roly-poly children. The level of schooling is not referred to, so this works for either preschoolers or kindergartners. A variety of scenarios are imagined and depicted: one child weeps on a teacher's lap, while parents, too, shed a few tears on the way out the door. Singing, learning to read, cleaning up the room, getting used to a rabbitthe day is over before the children realize it. The next day, those who had been accompanied by their parents only 24 hours earlier head out to school on their own. Each day and week of the semester is packed with activities and realities: the children are not always happy, teachers not always... |

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Readers who get the jokes in this zany tale will enjoy Ahlberg's quirky wit. "Once upon a topsy-turvy time in the middle of a long hot winter," an elaborately dressed couple visits Nurse Doodle's shop to obtain a baby. Eschewing the many different types of little ones available–a flowerpot-throwing baby, a crybaby, a robot baby–they choose a cat baby, and she settles into her new home quite nicely. However, one "harum-scarum night" while she is watching the neighbors play tennis by flashlight, the feline becomes frightened and, instead of running home, ends up where she started out. Luckily, she is restored to her parents in time to become a prizewinner in the baby show. Packed with tiny details, Wegner's small pen-and-ink illustrations are just right for this little... |

Howard's glorious nocturnal illustrations give new life to the late British author's 1968 tale of an owlet frightened of the night. "The dark is scary," Plop tells Mommy Barn Owl, who wisely instructs him to learn a bit more about it before passing judgment. Soon, Plop is off seeking new acquaintances, both human and animal, who tell him their favorite things about the evening, from fireworks and campfire singalongs to viewing the constellations ("The dark is wondrous. Look through the telescope," says one gentleman he meets). Tomlinson's reassuring tale is aimed squarely at preschoolers, who will thrill to a familiar scenario played out in an unusual setting. Howard's expertly shaded pastels evoke the owls' feather-softness against full-bleed illustrations in glowing, naturalistic colors, which he augments with... |

Ahlberg (The Jolly Postman) and Briggs (The Snowman) create a dialogue of words and images in these tales of a clumsy Englishman or, rather, an overgrown English boy. In Chapter One, Bert wakes up: "Meet Bert. This is him. Say hallo to Bert." The character extends a voice-bubble "Hallo!" His beaming smile, button eyes and round head suggest Briggs's Snowman reborn as a rugby player. Next, the text addresses a diminutive, dowdy Mrs. Bert and Baby Bert, who is "fast asleep. Shh! Turn the page... quietly." Inevitably, flipping the page awakens the baby, who explodes into red-faced howling. Bert himself is an infantile fellow, with an awkward body, endearing curiosity and holes in his droopy knit socks. When he tries to dress himself, he tumbles out the door ("He ends up in Scotland"); when he meets a giant sausage,... |

Suzy the cat loves her life in France, where she lives with a fisherman and his four sons. One day she falls asleep in a basket that turns out to be attached to a hot air balloon, and she finds herself in England, with a body of dreaded water between her and her home. Suzy takes up residence with kindly Aunt Josephine and day after day tries to find a way across the water. Maureen Lipman gives a capable reading of this short chapter book. Suzy's meow is a bit grating, but all is made up by Lipman's wonderful voice for Aunt Josephine's parrot, Biff. Much of this story is truly funny, even if the end is bittersweet. Collaborators on The Adventures of Bert, Allan Ahlberg and Raymond Briggs team up for a second round of silliness in A Bit More Bert. Cheeky chapters introduce absurd scenarios (in "Bert's Dog," Bert takes his dog, also named Bert, for a walk; in "Bert's Chips," the boy shares his snack with Grandma Bert, Baby Bert and Bert the dog); the unadulterated text and comic strip-style illustrations play up the slapstick humor.
