This British import is great fun, sure to entertain children and parents alike. The Jolly Postman goes from home to home in a fairy-tale kingdom, delivering letters to such familiar addresses as "Mr. and Mrs. Bear, Three Bears Cottage, The Woods." Every other page is an actual envelope, with a letter tucked inside. The letter to the three bears, for instance, is from Goldilocks, who apologizes for the trouble she's caused and invites Baby Bear to her birthday party. Some authors would stop with this cute concept, but the Ahlbergs have given this book their all. The story of the postman's travels is told in charming verse; the pictures are delightful, full of clever detail; and the results are frequently hilarious. (The wicked witch of "Hansel and Gretel" fame, for instance, receives a circular from Hobgoblin... |

"Each Peach Pear Plum. I spy Tom Thumb!" In this engaging, interactive book for the very young, familiar nursery-rhyme characters such as Mother Hubbard and Baby Bunting sneak their way into the gentle drawings. Even young children who might not know all the fairy-tale stars can find them lurking in the cupboard, on the stairs, or deep in the woods. In the happy finale, the whole cast meets up for plum pie in the sun, where the little one on your lap will gleefully find everyone. An American Library Association Notable Book. In what amounts to both a primer and a catalogue of a schoolchild's "firsts," the Alhbergs have combined a pleasing design with salient bits of information, driven home by a band of roly-poly children. The level of schooling is not referred to, so this works for either preschoolers or kindergartners. A variety of scenarios are imagined and depicted: one child weeps on a teacher's lap, while parents, too, shed a few tears on the way out the door. Singing, learning to read, cleaning up the room, getting used to a rabbitthe day is over before the children realize it. The next day, those who had been accompanied by their parents only 24 hours earlier head out to school on their own. Each day and week of the semester is packed with activities and realities: the children are not always happy, teachers not always... |

From Kirkus Reviews
What could be more appropriate? The Jolly Postman (1986)- -cycling past ``the fast-eloping dish and spoon,'' a giant beanstalk, and King Cole's castle--delivers holiday letters and gifts addressed to ``Mr. H. Dumpty, Wincey Ward, Cock Robin Memorial Hospital''; the Gingerbread boy; and even ``Mister Wolf,'' found ``wolfing pies and sherry'' and sporting amiably with three pigs and the little red hen. All is reported in deft, jovial verse; six bound-in envelopes contain amusing missives- -cards, a picture puzzle (Humpty Dumpty, of course), a tiny pamphlet of a book, a picture letter (Granny's sound advice to R. Hood), and--for the postman--an accordion-style peep show. The illustrations are as charming as the text--even the postmarks are fun. Pure delight. (Picture book. 2+) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus... |
