Imagine coming upon a fountain of youth in a forest. To live forever--isn't that everyone's ideal? For the Tuck family, eternal life is a reality, but their reaction to their fate is surprising. Award winner Natalie Babbitt (Knee-Knock Rise, The Search for Delicious) outdoes herself in this sensitive, moving adventure in which 10-year-old Winnie Foster is kidnapped, finds herself helping a murderer out of jail, and is eventually offered the ultimate gift--but doesn't know whether to accept it. Babbitt asks profound questions about the meaning of life and death, and leaves the reader with a greater appreciation for the perfect cycle of nature. Intense and powerful, exciting and poignant, Tuck Everlasting will last forever--in the reader's imagination. An ALA Notable Book. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Ages 4-9. This collected edition of the Small Poems series includes all the original 99 poems and illustrations (first published in four volumes) and also 14 new poems by Worth and illustrations by Babbitt. The new entries have the same beautiful combination of the precise and the tentative as do the earlier poems, finding in ordinary things Blake's universe in a grain of sand. The lines are very short, one or two words, and most are physically exact, whether describing the "tacky" heat of July (that feels like "Nap on a / Ripe peach") or the soft scraps of creased paper that come out of your pocket. Babbitt's small ink drawings embody the realistic and make us imagine much more. The final poem "book" is an astonishing climax, moving out from the five senses to the four corners of the world and then fitting it all... |

"Delicious! Don't you agree?" No! And neither does anyone else in the kingdom. What exactly does "delicious" mean? To find an answer, Gaylen consults many delightful people, ancient dwarfs, odd woodland creatures and one very mysterious mermaid. Flawlessly narrating this adventure is author Natalie Babbitt herself, with a full cast to separately voice each character. Together they create a fast-paced wonderland brimming with excitement. The range of voices creates an authenticity far greater than any single reader could produce. For young readers, there is only one word to describe this productionÐdelicious! P.E.F. This collection of 27 poems by the late Worth (1933-94) once again heralds the joy of words, the way they feel in the mouth, the way they look on the page. "Ice Cream" makes the perfect example: "Melting, it Softly fills The mouth With something Like the velvet Word vanilla." Re-imagining everyday encounters, she urges readers to consider each and take pleasure in the entire sensory experience. "October" captures the month's role as a threshold to the wintry days ahead: "Frost a Presence in The woods: A sound Of footfalls, One here, One there, As the leaves Step down." The titular poem becomes a wry caution against vanity, "He fans Out that Famous halo, Turns it About for All to see, Folds it Down and Saunters away, Trailing his Heavy burden Of beauty. (Meanwhile, His freckled Brown wife Rambles around Him, plain... |

The ship Amaryllis sinks in a hurricane, but for 30 years the captain's widow waits for him to send her a message from the bottom of the sea. Her granddaughter waits with her, and "the author reminds us that the line between reality and imagination is undefinable. Babbitt rings the bell again," PW said. Barron's debut novel is a splendid action-adventure science fantasy filled with deep, resonant emotional and spiritual undertones. When evil powers attack the sun, Kate's grandfather, a famous astrophysicist, embarks on a galaxy-spanning quest to save it from certain destruction. Refusing to be left behind, Kate sets off after her grandfather and is caught up in the ensuing cosmic struggle between the forces of light and darkness. On the surface, Heartlight appears to be an homage to the science fantasies of Madeleine L'Engle, and Barron does consciously tip his hat to her. However, his own imagination is so rich--the novel is filled with brave people composed of snow, mighty butterflies made of pure condensed light and terrifying, ferocious villains--that this book also shines as a bold, original effort worthy... |

"Ten comic stories about the machinations of the Devil to increase the population of his realm...The stories are delightful in their narrative fluency, full of surprises, and frequently spiced with dashes of Saki-like mischief. A suitably wicked but hilarious drawing accompanies each tale."--Starred / The Horn Book
"High on my list is The Devil's Storybook by Natalie Babbitt. This Devil is not dire; he is a scheming practical joker and comes to earth often when he is restless, to play tricks on clergymen, goodwives, poets, and pretty girls."--Jean Stafford, The New Yorker
"A masterful Devil's advocate, Natalie Babbitt presents ten brief testimonials to Satan's unflagging gusto for dirty tricks. Paunchy and well past his prime, this Prince of Darkness is no Superdemon."--Starred / School... |
