PreSchool-Grade 2-Elliot Moose and his friends gather to bake a birthday cake for Lionel the lion, though they have no idea how to do so. Despite their frustrations, they finally produce one for their friend, who declares that it is the best cake he has ever tasted. The story ends with a recipe for "A Very Special Cake." The illustrations, rendered in pencil crayon, lack personality and visual appeal, and the story line is a bit boring and predictable. However, young bakers will recognize and maybe even learn from the stuffed animals' common mishaps in the kitchen. The salvaged cake, complete with icing, candies, and colored candles, serves up the positive message that even the worst mistakes can be fixed.Susan Knell, Pittsburgh State University, Pittsburgh, KS Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

One need only glance at this anthology's lineup of authors to know that it's bound to be loaded with kinky, creative sex. And indeed, that's exactly what Hamilton delivers in "Beyond the Ardeur," which uses the setting of a wedding to bring back virtually the entire cast of characters from her popular series about necromancer Anita Blake. While Hamilton's fans will enjoy revisiting these night creatures, some may be disappointed to find that this tale is all sex and no slaying; the only mystery is which paranormal hunk(s) will satisfy Anita's ardeur. Far more suspenseful is York's "Burning Moon," which follows a blind tarot reader and a werewolf as they steam up the sheets and try to trap a serial killer. Equally compelling but more inventive is Wilks's "Originally Human"; neither the succubus heroine (whose age... |

reS-Gr 1-Intrigued by what he believes to be a treasure map, Elliot Moose and his stuffed-animal friends dig a very deep hole. All are discouraged when they discover that the map simply shows the location where his friend Lionel plans to plant a new tree. Disappointed, the friends give up digging only to realize that they are trapped in the hole, and it's only through Beaverton's cleverness and creativity that they are able to get out. Beck's choice of language will appeal to readers as they enjoy the pleasing phrases ("When Angel clambered up, the fuzzy tower began to sway. Elliot wibbled, Beaverton wobbled and they all came tumbling down"). Pencil-crayon illustrations are softly textured and resemble a cross between the art in Paulette Bourgeois's "Franklin" series (Kids Can) and Marc Brown's "Arthur"... |

Andrea Yates's horrific murders of her five small children-drowning them one by one in their bathtub-remains one of the most shocking crimes of recent years. In this overly detailed retelling, investigative journalist O'Malley has transformed herself in the popular current style from observer into participant, albeit with ample justification. O'Malley, who had written for TV's Law and Order, was suspicious when a prosecution witness, attempting to establish that Yates acted with premeditation, testified that the television show had recently aired an episode in which a mother killed her children and then escaped punishment by asserting a postpartum depression defense. Sure enough, no such episode was ever made, and O'Malley led the Yates defense team to rebuttal evidence that came too late to affect the guilty... |

PreSchool-Grade 1-This installment in the series taps into the genuine feelings and responses of children. Here, the stuffed moose receives a giant red box on Christmas Eve. As excited as he is, Elliot realizes that his friends will feel left out without early presents of their own, so one by one he makes gifts for them-only to discover that his own box is empty (but wonderful when converted into a sleigh for playing Santa). Without undue emphasis on either the moral betterment of the character or on the sentimental aspects of the holiday, this cheerfully illustrated story stays close to a young child's experience of Christmas, and will not disappoint fans of the series.-S. From Booklist
PreS-Gr.1. Over a bedtime snack Elliot, a little moose, confides in his friends that he can't sleep for fretting about the noises he hears at night. First they share shivers, then they joke about the noises. More helpfully, his friend Beaverton explains that "house noises" from the refrigerator, furnace, and shutters always seem louder at night. Later, as he lies in bed, Elliot hears new sounds: the footfalls of the other stuffed animals who suddenly have night frights and are making their way to Elliot's room for a comforting, convivial sleepover. The colorful drawings bring these toys to life in a thoroughly childlike manner. Both the story and the art convey a cozy feeling without becoming overly sweet. Canadian in origin, Elliot is known to American children through his PBS television show as well as six previous... |

From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Jesse Larsen
Rose, the youngest daughter and perceptive narrator of The Fountain Overflows, is a mildly fictional, youthful Rebecca West. In early 1900s London, Papa, misunderstood writer and never-successful politician, goes away - again - to earn money. The children stay very busy being young, trying hard to respect, reconcile, and live with Mamma's tradition of genteel Englishness and Papa's foolishness while their worrisome - and embarrassing - poverty deepens. Mamma is discouraged but brave, "a nerve-jerked woman" able to "straighten her shoulders and cock her hat and assume the character of a smart and undefeated woman." A concert pianist turned wife and mother, she makes music a constant for her children. Rose and Mary play the piano; Cordelia performs on the violin "with the air... |

With her debut book, Beck kicks off a new series, introducing an entire cast of stuffed toys: bright-eyed Elliot Moose, his best friend Socks (a sock monkey) and an assortment of other plush friends. While rushing off to meet Socks, the eponymous hero snags his leg on some molding and rips open a seam. A view of his fluffy innards naturally causes him some anxiety: "What if [his stuffing] all came out? For a moment he imagined himself as just an empty shell of fur." The other toys proceed to tape, bandage and glue Elliot's wound until Beaverton (a stuffed beaver) stitches him up; the moose is soon doing cartwheels and planning his next adventure. Although this is a competent and pleasant enough starting episode, none of the characters particularly stands out, and the text at times feels fussy and overwrought... |

reS-Gr 1-As they are making the final preparations for a big talent show, Socks the monkey reaches too far from the high ladder and spills blue paint all over Elliot Moose and herself. When a bath is suggested, Elliot agrees, although he has never had one before. However, being stuffed animals, they do not realize how soggy and waterlogged they will become. Their friends attempt to dry them with towels, a fan, and a toy airplane propeller. They finally light upon the idea of hanging on the outside clothesline. Once they are dry, the show can go on. The pencil-crayon artwork is expressive and finely detailed, bringing Elliot and friends to life. Socks's delight when she turns her favorite color purple is cleverly portrayed. Use this story with Diana White's No Bath for Boris (Dutton, 1990; o.p.) and Audrey... |
