Grade 1-4-Through well-chosen incidents and details, this transitional novel captures the love between a boy and a dog. While waiting for a storm to pass, the family farmhand Pete tells stories of his childhood and his dog. In the first episode, the dog arrives, doghouse and all, during a twister, so Pete names him Tornado. In the next three stories, the animal demonstrates a card trick, inadvertently holds a pet turtle in his mouth for an hour, and feuds nonviolently with a cat. The last two chapters tell how Pete has to return his pet to its original owner, and how Tornado returns to the boy. Short, crisp sentences in large print surrounded by ample white space make this short book accessible to readers new to chapter books. Each chapter features a realistically rendered, full-page, black-and-white... |

From Publishers Weekly
For Byars, meeting an enormous blacksnake on her front porch becomes a springboard for tracing her lifelong love of animals, and also her likes and dislikes, successes and failures as a writer. The result is an appealingly idiosyncratic narrative that seamlessly weaves together the Newbery winner's life and art. In a personable, highly conversational style studded with wry observations and shot through with humility and perspective, Byars shares her views on the relative significance of various elements of a story; the importance of names in inventing characters ("I never had any trouble creating a terrible character as long as his name was Bubba"); the necessity for "lots and lots of good scraps" from real life; and the impossibility of writing when one is being watched, even by a snake. She uses lists,... |

Grade 1-3–Byars continues the gentle fantasy begun in Little Horse (Holt, 2002). The diminutive animal has begun to make himself comfortable in his new home among humans, but he still dreams of his old life in the Valley of Little Horses. A frightening thunderstorm wreaks havoc on the farm and frees him from his tiny stable. Finding himself on his own, he narrowly escapes the claws of the cat and makes his way to the stream that he knows will lead him home once again. But first he must escape a forest fire and a predatory bird. As in the first book, Byars masterfully conveys Little Horse's naive perspective. The prose is clear and uncluttered, and the action moves crisply. Readers who've enjoyed the first book will relish the scenes that show how the protagonist's character has grown and find this a... |

Grade 3-5–Mr. Magro asks his students to write about a big emergency, for "fun and extra credit," and the 12 stories that follow are the result of that assignment. (All but one receives extra credit.) The situations described are as varied as the personalities that emerge as the children read their stories aloud. Some tales are poignant, others are humorous; all are as credible as the characters sketched. Some youngsters are determined; with the help of her mom, Joy Frazure tracks down the man who saved her as an infant, just to thank him. Others demonstrate quick thinking or the ability to rethink opinions: Abe Lincoln's words save Augustus T. Bruewhiler III from a bear during a camping trip while a goat helps Robbie Robinson change his mind about mean Mrs. Meany. The final story–the one that... |

Book Description
Byars applies her distinctive brand of quirky humor to two adventuresome women determined to dare the frontier with minimum experience. The dialogue and antics are convincingly like those of rivalrous young siblings anywhere on the block. The story lines are clever, and the old-West setting adds flair. C. Book Review
Ages 5 & up. This book for beginning readers is a perfect match between a Newbery award-winning author and a Caldecott award-winning illustrator. Told in the first person, the four short chapters depict a warm, funny relationship between a boy and his sweet but sometimes pesky younger brother. Readers will enjoy the dry humor of the narrative, the likeable characters and the expressive and fanciful illustrations. In a starred review, Booklist wrote, "The pictures are achingly affectionate... the economy of line and language will grab new readers."

Grade 1-3-This third book about the famous sisters is just as funny and original as the other two. The Gollys, a singing, dancing team, travel all over the West in their covered wagon, entertaining the residents of different towns. Truesdell's bright watercolors depict the silly duo as they try to rid themselves of a bad-luck goat in the audience, journey to see a magic talking rock, and have other adventures. The easy-to-read stories are great fun and will involve children, but there is also a warmth and feeling of love between these siblings that permeates the book. When May-May and Rose hide together under their bed, sing so they won't hear the thunder, and close their eyes so they can't see the lightning, readers get a glimpse into their special, close relationship.Jan Shepherd Ross, Dixie Elementary... |
