Book Description
An intimate story of personal cost, risk, and loss in the mountaineering world. Nobody has written more eloquently about the human side of high-altitude mountaineering than Maria Coffey. Because the mountaineering world has faced so many devastating losses recently, this is an especially timely story about the loved ones left behind to sort out their sorrow and confusion, anger and healing. With openness and honesty, Coffey describes her love affair with elite British mountaineer Joe Tasker, who perished with his climbing partner Peter Boardman while attempting Everest's then-unclimbed Northeast Ridge in 1982. She relives her experiences, first within the hard-partying mountaineering scene and then during her long journey to understanding and acceptance of the tragedy that cost her the man she loved. She gives us an... |

K-Gr 2--When Victor adopts Teelo, a soon-to-be-homeless cat, and takes him to his peaceful little cabin on Cloud Island, Teelo is thoroughly pleased with his idyllic new life. Then, in quick succession, Victor brings home a rooster, three hens, a terrier, a snake, and a parrot. Each new animal brings more disruption to Teelo's ordered life as, one by one, his favorite napping spots are usurped by a newcomer. Upon overhearing Victor tease about how quiet a visit to Thunder Rock would be compared to the noise at home, Teelo stows away on the man's kayak. Instead of peace, however, the feline discovers that the pandemonium caused by all of the wild creatures is overwhelming and he is happy to return home. The tale's moral is reminiscent of the many variations of the Yiddish folktale "It Could Always Be Worse."... |

Coffey, whose previous book, Fragile Edge, detailed the death of the man she loved on Mt. Everest, here examines the psychological and emotional side of extreme adventurers and that of their family members. For these profiles, Coffey draws on her own experience as well as that of other climbers and their spouses. A common theme emerges, of the powerful appeal of the next challenge, even when climbers have suffered severe injuries and are leaving spouses and young children at home. Although Coffey doesn't offer conclusive reasons as to why partners tolerate such behavior, she deftly examines the unique bond between an explorer and his or her family. She recounts the surprise of a climber who learns the author has married a non-climber: "I laughed at his presumption that I'd seek out another mountaineer, yet I... |

Grade 4-9-Encounters with sharks, giant centipedes, crocodiles, falling coconuts, and native peoples are detailed in this fascinating travelogue by Coffey and Goering, who kayaked through the Solomon Islands. Interesting sidebars answer questions about customs, school, transportation, and unusual animals of the region. Striking full- and double-page captioned color photographs accompany the text. Each chapter also includes a hand-drawn map that will enable readers to travel along with the adventurers. This is a book that will be great to read just for fun and it will serve as a terrific accompaniment to geography and social studies lessons.Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

PreSchool-Grade 3-In his third adventure, the feline with a penchant for trouble finds himself adrift on a log after chasing a rat onto a precarious branch over the sea. Many waves and a whale or two later, he is rescued by a young girl and her grandfather. The summer passes with Teelo making himself quite at home onboard the sailboat, winning the heart of Lilly and the sneezes of Grandpa. As the fall comes, the old man heads the boat to the city dock, passing Cloud Island. The cat's curiosity leads to another dunk in the sea, and this time his original owner, Victor the Vet, is paddling by in his kayak. When he sees the bond that has formed between Lilly and Teelo, he lets the girl keep the cat as long as they visit often. Crusty, old Grandpa agrees, sneezes and all. "Cliff-hanger" page turns... |

Book Description
In their successful, internationally published book A Boat in Our Baggage, Maria Coffey and Dag Goering described their year-long, worldwide expedition by kayak. Since then, they have continued to travel many parts of the globe, including some of the last truly wild places of the British Columbia coast. Their latest adventure - a 1,000-plus kilometre journey circumnavigating Vancouver Island in its entirety - is detailed and illustrated in Visions of the Wild.
Coffey and Goering set off from their home on Protection Island, BC, in July 1999. For three months they confronted some of the most exposed, storm-battered coastlines British Columbia has to offer: infamous places such as Cape Scott, Estevan Point and the imposing Brooks Peninsula, all of which have become the sites of shipwrecks and fatalities.
