The Story of Babar--the early adventures of the enduring, endearing elephant--was written in 1931 by French writer Jean de Brunhoff (1899-1937). Since then, it has been translated into at least 12 languages. It's amazing how much can happen to one little elephant in the course of one little book: Babar loses his mother to a hunter, wanders into the city, gets a new wardrobe, becomes the hit of high society, marries his cousin Céleste (totally acceptable in contemporary Elephantine society), and is crowned King of the Elephants. The Story of Babar is essentially the tale of a country boy who comes to the city and, while there, comes of age. In the end, he returns home to share his knowledge and experiences with family and friends. The beautiful, delightfully detailed illustrations--de Brunhoff was a painter by... |

Book Review
Seven decades after Babar was born, the world is still very much in love with the noble elephant. Before his untimely death at age 37, Jean de Brunhoff wrote and illustrated six stories about Babar and his friends and family. In this exquisite gift edition, every one of these stories is included, with not a word or picture left out. From The Story of Babar--in which the elephant is born, loses his mother, runs off to Paris, and returns to be crowned king--through The Travels of Babar, Babar the King, Babar and Zephir, Babar and His Children, and Babar and Father Christmas, the beloved pachyderm's incredible life adventures are chronicled for our reading pleasure. In his introduction, picture book author-illustrator Kevin Henkes writes, "Where else could one find a balloon accident, a deadly poison mushroom, a... |

Book Review
Babar and Queen Celeste have just been married in this early story from the most famous of elephantine chronicles. They depart for their honeymoon in a hot-air balloon, and at first all seems wonderful as they glide over a charming coastal town that might be St. Tropez before the advent of tourism. Alas, a storm takes them out to sea and then dumps them on a desert island. The fierce, spear-carrying "savages" who subsequently attack them will remind you that this book was written and illustrated in 1934: they are as far from politically correct as you can get. And the war between the elephants and the rhinoceroses, which ends the story, is also problematic for a modern audience. But the travels and adventures in between show all the excitement and charm that has made the Babar series an enduring hit. (Ages 2 to 6)... |

A trio of reissues bring back the beloved elephant in a starring role. The last book to be published before his death, Jean de Brunhoff's Babar and Father Christmas (1940) follows the hero in search of Santa as he attempts to bring Yuletide cheer to Elephants' country. A few spreads were finished by de Brunhoff's then 12-year-old son Laurent. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Book Description
A nonstop action adventure It's Isabelle to the rescue when her father is mysteriously kidnapped while the two are on a camping trip. Babar's little daughter proves herself to be brave and clever when she tracks down her father with the help of a lion, a snake, and a monkey. The adventure is only just beginning when she finds the elephant king-he's being held in a hidden city by a group of strange elephants with striped ears! How plucky Isabelle manages to help her father escape makes for an action-packed adventure that will keep children on the edge of their seats as much as it did when the book was first released in 1993.

Book Review
One of Jean de Brunhoff's five original Babar stories, Babar and His Children tells how the royal elephant and Queen Celeste await the birth of their first child... and discover to their surprise that they have three! The loyal townsfolk bring gifts, and the babies are named before being weighed by wise Dr. Capoulosse (he of the stern expression and pince-nez). Then it's time for young Flora, Pom, and Alexander to get into a series of scrapes and be saved by the bravery and good sense of either their parents or other animals. Brunhoff's charming, faintly Edwardian illustrations never cease to capture the imagination, and this particular story has something in it for every member of a young family--even if some members of your family are merely human. From AudioFile
An enduring children's book combines stories of memorable characters with definitive illustrations. This is certainly the case with the De Brunhoffs' many adventures of Babar the elephant, beginning with his childhood and continuing into the experiences he shares with his family and friends. Adding to the lasting appeal, the De Brunhoffs do not shy away from life issues. Death and birth, peace and war, patience and hard work, and sorrow and joy are shared honestly. Louis Jourdan narrates the stories in royal fashion. His deliberate, calm style gives import to the events of each story. He adds just enough accent for Cornelius, enthusiasm for Arthur, and wisdom for the Old Lady. Gentle music and sound effects help create the mood. Enjoy this regal presentation of Babar stories! From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Fans present and past will be pleased to see another story about their beloved Babar. In this simple tale, the elephant spends the day at school with his children, Pom, Flor, and Alexander. The ageless Old Lady enters the scene as the kind but strict schoolteacher. After a busy day of writing, math, science, and noisy bus rides, Babar is exhausted. He realizes that being a child is more tiring than he remembered. The bright, clear illustrations are adapted to look like the original artwork of Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff. A pleasant, familiar visit with a lovable old friend.-Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
