Kindergarten-Grade 3–Babar and Queen Celeste decide to embark on a world tour with the children. They head to the airport and board Elephant One, equipped with a library and language CDs. The first stop is Italy, followed by Germany, Spain, and Russia, where they learn to say hello and a simple phrase in the host language. They move on to India, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, and across the Pacific to the Anasazi caves of the American Southwest, Machu Picchu in Peru, then across the Atlantic to Egypt. Here the story begins to feel like one of those 14 countries in 14 days package deals and readers, along with Babar's children, will get jet lagged. But they cannot forego Paris or Antarctica so they make two more stops before flying home. In contrast to the wild and unpredictable adventures in Jean de... |

Book Review
On one of their weekly balloon flights over Celesteville, Babar and Celeste notice that the railroad station is standing empty. Elephants, it seems, now prefer cars over trains. Interestingly, although Babar comments on the roads "jammed with traffic," he and his queen decide to focus on the other issue--the abandoned station. Celeste comes up with an idea to turn it into a museum to house their art collection, and soon an architect is drawing up plans and workers are renovating the building. When the great day of the opening arrives, what a show! The royal couple had acquired some pretty impressive and well known works of art--all featuring elephants, of course. Laurent de Brunhoff outdoes himself with the real-life art-inspired paintings and sculptures, from Mary Cassatts "Mother and Child" to Edvard Munchs... |

From AudioFile
An enduring children's book combines stories of memorable characters with definitive illustrations. This is certainly the case with the De Brunhoffs' many adventures of Babar the elephant, beginning with his childhood and continuing into the experiences he shares with his family and friends. Adding to the lasting appeal, the De Brunhoffs do not shy away from life issues. Death and birth, peace and war, patience and hard work, and sorrow and joy are shared honestly. Louis Jourdan narrates the stories in royal fashion. His deliberate, calm style gives import to the events of each story. He adds just enough accent for Cornelius, enthusiasm for Arthur, and wisdom for the Old Lady. Gentle music and sound effects help create the mood. Enjoy this regal presentation of Babar stories! Babar narrates this lighthearted guide to yoga for pachyderms (and people). He begins by explaining that archeologists working in a cave near Celesteville recently discovered ancient drawings revealing that woolly mammoths not only practiced yoga they invented it. Since then, yoga has become "tremendously popular" in Babar's hometown; it "helps us all to relax and draw strength from our inner elephant." In straightforward prose, this thoroughly relaxed elephant outlines yoga movements, stretches and exercises to improve balance and to strengthen the back and stomach. (Yoga lovers will recognize his opening Salutation to the Sun, and all that follow, as the real McCoy.) Though these instructions include playful touches (at one point Babar notes, "I find wrapping my trunk around my feet helps to stretch"), aspiring... |

Like so many concept books, Babar's Counting Book exploits a popular character's appeal to sell children (and their parents) on an educational tool. Any child who is already hooked on Babar will naturally be drawn to the book, but it doesn't represent de Brunhoff's best work. The textwhich inexplicably changes tenses twiceis uninspired. (Babar's children go for a walk and count one bird, two balloons, three race cars, etc.) Although the elephant and his extended family are always delightful to look at, de Brunhoff doesn't appear to have given these illustrations a great deal of thought, and the colors look washed out.
