Book Review
The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." PreSchool-Grade 1-- This uniquely designed book features a series of cutouts stacked so that with each page turn, a layer is removed to reveal yet another picture. Each configuration is an animal: a tiger's face (a circle shape) and two ears disappear with a page turn to leave viewers with a square within which is a mouse. The mouse's square frame, removed, reveals a fox. There are three such series, and each ends with a small round-up of the shapes used so far. That's not all. On the reverse of the turned page is the shape cutout previously removed with the shape's printed name. While the tiger and lion are not easy to identify in their geometrically shaped components, children will readily name the seven others and will delight in identifying both animals and shapes. Boldly designed pages easily carry to... |

PreSchool-Grade 2–A counting-book companion to Martin and Ehlert's Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom (S & S, 1989). The cut-paper art is almost identical to the earlier work, right down to the use of vibrant splashes of color. The layout will also be familiar to that title's many fans. At the center of the story this time, however, is an apple tree. Numerals race to the top with 1, 2, and 3 leading the way. Next come 4, 5, and 6 climbing right behind, but "Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3… Will there be a place for me?" asks 0. Page after page, the numbers climb ("Hot pink 12, lucky 13, picking apples, red and green") and they all forget 0 down in the lower right-hand corner. They keep going "until at last there's 99, and all the numbers are feeling fine." Except for 0, that is, who begins to cry once again,... |

With her characteristically vibrant artwork, Ehlert depicts the planting of a family garden. Ages 3-7. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1 Planting a Rainbow , a companion to Ehlert's Growing Vegetable Soup (HBJ, 1987), is a dazzling celebration of the colorful variety in a flower garden and the cyclical excitement of gardening. A young child relates in ten simple sentences the yearly cycle and process of planning, planting, and picking flowers in a garden. Mother and child plant bulbs in fall, order seeds from catalogs in winter, eagerly anticipate the first shoots of spring, select seedlings in summer, ``and watch the rainbow grow,'' reveling in the opulence of color. The power of this book lies in the glowing... |

Performers of all descriptions cavort across Ehlert's ( Color Zoo ; Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf ) pages, rendered as iridescent geometric shapes against dramatic black backdrops. Along with classic circus acts--a bareback rider, a fierce lion, "the world's biggest elephant"--are unusual, eccentric choices: a pair of leaping lizards, a band of marching snakes and "those marvelous musclemen, the Pretzel brothers, who form a towering human pyramid." These dazzling artistes are introduced by a ringing text that captures the voice--alliterative, hyperbolic, a tad bombastic--of a grand circus master. Ehlert's characteristically vibrant colors and exhilarating style find even broader scope under the big top. Performed with panache, her junket gives new life to a favorite children's venue and is well worth the price of... |

Ehlert (Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf) returns to one of her favorite themes—the rainbow beauty of autumn leaves—for this refreshing riff on leaf peeping and collecting. A narrator recalls the Leaf Man that used to live nearby but recently blew away with the wind. "He left no travel plans." From that breezy beginning, the narrator imagines the different flight patterns the Leaf Man may have followed "past the chickens, toward the marsh,... over the prairie meadows,... past the spotted cows," and punctuates the lyrical text with an occasional refrain ( "a Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows"). All the while, Ehlert sparks her foliage flight of fancy with her snazzy leaf collages. Fiery maple, brown mottled catalpa and bright yellow ginko leaves take the shape of various animals and objects on each... |

PreSchool-Grade 4-This unique picture-book and tape set provides a fresh look at the Earth from the perspective of some of its most important inhabitants, endangered animals. The lyrics for each of the 10 songs are printed in the book along with a portrait of the featured animal, creating a gallery effect. With a tone more heartfelt than preachy, the songs celebrate our planet while offering a gentle environmental message. The language is simple, poetic, and rhythmic. The first song describes the jungle as "Home to cheetah/Home to bat/Home to human wearing hat/Monkey and machete swing high/Under same blue sky." In "Pretty Tree," a guileless giant panda wonders at the funny sound "(chop! chop!)" that shakes the ground beneath his bamboo tree. Some of the selections are a little lighter in tone. In "I've Never... |

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Stylized fish shapes in flat, razzle-dazzle colors against a dark blue background float across the pages from one to ten, accompanied by one little dark fish who keeps the count going. Cutout circles at the eyes reveal colors on succeeding pages. The slight text, occasionally in rhyme, introduces adjectives through the count, and tries to set a context of wish-fulfillment. It's a slick production, attempting several concepts at once--numbers, shapes, colors, imagining, addition to a value of one--but it doesn't quite... |

The "festive colors" and "flashing brass" of a marching band appear before the reader in this foot-stomping parade of color. "Big as ants" and "loud as crickets," the tiny marchers climb off a yellow bus. The reader hears the band's "distant drums/chirping horns/THUMP, THUMP/THUMP, THUMP."Colors and sounds grow larger and louder as the band grows closer ("big as birds/loud as lions/THUMP, THUMP/THUMP, THUMP"), then gradually fade away. Baer's crescendo and de-crescendo of words is amiably matched by the typesize and by Ehlert's stylized marchers. The design is crisp and inventive; abstract but definable bandmembers made of rectangles and circles in primary colors step smartly across vivid pages. Readers will want to cheer for this rat-a-tat-tat parade. Ages 2-6. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
