Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends. Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski." Maddie, a girl who had... |

Book Review
Who else but a member of the Moffat family could, during kindergarten recess, accidentally hitch a ride out of town on a boxcar? Or wind up trapped in the breadbox outside the delicatessen store? Or kindly offer to escort the Salvation Army man to his destination--only to accidentally bump him out of his own horse-drawn wagon? The Moffats is a paradigm of old-fashioned family fun. Four children and a hard-working widowed mother live together on New Dollar Street in the village of Cranbury. Their seemingly quiet lives are studded with almost daily unexpected adventures, with droll results. This charming book has been making readers smile for over half a century. It reflects a gentler era, when the jolly chief of police had time to sit on the curb to hear a little girl's "crimes" and a little boy's escapade on a train was... |

From AudioFile
This story, set in ancient Rome, tells the story of the barbarians' invasion--but from the point of view of Miranda the cat and her daughter, Punka, as the two flee the burning city. Lyssa Browne, whose voice may be familiar to listeners from her work on the Discovery Channel, does an excellent job here. Her narration is pleasing and carefully paced, but full of expression when dramatic moments unfold. Best of all, Browne fearlessly and authentically speaks the language of cats (including yowls, meows, and purrs) and capably translates the odd Latin phrase for listeners. Children will enjoy this taste of ancient history told from a brave cat's perspective. J.C.G. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3–The youthful tones in narrator Christina Moore's voice bring new life to the Eleanor Estes' Newbery-honored tales of family life during World War I and the goofy antics of seven-year-old Rufus Moffat and his siblings. Although originally published in 1943, as the last of four titles in the Moffat series, the family's adventures are timeless. Moore wisely lets the amusing stories speak for themselves, keeping her narration understated. Listeners should be prepared to fast forward a bit to the ends of tapes, as the producer chose not to break up chapters across sides A and B or across cassettes. Pop this recording into your car's tape deck for a long family road trip and everyone will be entertained–Jennifer Iserman, Dakota County Library, Burnhaven Branch, Burnsville, MN

Book Description
There has never been a museum in Cranbury...until now. Among its treasures are the first bike each of the Moffat kids rode, stardust from a meteor that fell to earth, a beautiful painting made by Sylvie, and-most spectacularly-Rufus, the Waxworks Boy, who is as funny as he is waxy. The museum is so interesting that Mr. Pennypepper even brings tourists to visit. But the museum is really for Jane, Joey, and Rufus themselves, so they can remember all the good times they've had. Because life is changing for the Moffats. Yet even if Sylvie gets married, or Joey goes off to work, or Rufus grows up, one thing will never change: The Moffats are still the sort to hilariously fill even the most ordinary day with extraordinary fun. Eleanor Estes's beloved Moffats stories are being published in new editions as... |
