Starred Review. Grade 1-4–Is there room for one more "Cinderella" variant in your collection? The answer is yes if it's this charming version set in the 1920s. Ella Cinders, her father, and Buttons the doorman/delivery boy run a dress shop until the terrible day when Mr. Cinders remarries and his nasty new wife moves in with her equally nasty daughters, Ruby and Pearl. "His new wife seemed to pop up from nowhere like a sharp-eyed, expensively dressed jack-in-the box." Ella's life is misery from then on, mitigated only by the care and attention of the faithful Buttons. Her Fairy Godmother sends her off to the ball where the Duke of Arc is smitten with her, but in the end Ella chooses a different happily ever after, with Buttons. Hughes's gouache-and-pen-line illustrations exhibit her usual meticulous...

Book Description
Asked what problems most perplexed 'young men at present' Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) replied 'a growing sense of discrepancy'. His wry and wise poetry explores the tensions of a time of radical changes in the religious, political and literary landscape. He has a sharp eye for absurdity. Clough was a writer of wide interests and liberal sympathies, vividly idiomatic and sensuous, delighting in the detail and variety of everyday life. His technical dexterity is a delight: the poems encompass satire and lyric, dialogue, plot and contemporary reference. His narrative poem he Bothie of Tober-Na-Vuolich and the epistolary Amours de Voyage have the momentum and social precision of novels, capturing a precise image of the Victorian world of the 1840s. This volume includes a generous selection of the full...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-Alfie tells about the things that he and his toddler sibling like to do together, separately, and with their parents or friends. But most special is his sister's dependence on him to be her "big brother" forever. This loving book about family relationships stresses the positive and enduring ties between siblings, and the natural feelings of protectiveness that the elder one possesses. The realistic gouache and oil-pastel illustrations show the children's bond to perfection. A special book for any household with more than one preschool child.Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

PreSchool-Grade 2-A welcome collection of 20 fresh new poems about Annie Rose, her family, and friends-beloved characters who have starred in The Big Alfie and Annie Rose Storybook (Lothrop, 1989) and other favorite titles by Hughes. From AudioFile
Jan Francis portrays a nameless narrator who laments the many transgressions of her little sister. This collection of stand-alone short stories is presented like a chapter book, and Francis's reading can't overcome the significant amount of repetition from story to story. In some parts, as when the little sister meets her favorite television personality or knits a scarf for the neighbor, Francis's interpretations are priceless. And her imitation of a temper tantrum is dead-on. But her emphatic tone sometimes lapses into condescension. This uneven production will leave some listeners laughing and others wanting.
