From School Library Journal
PreS. A new title from the creator of Kipper and other popular books for toddlers. As they play a game of hide-and-seek, all of the piglets are found in their various hiding places except for Tiny Pig, who gives the others a merry chase. Derivative of Where's Spot and countless other lift-the-flap books, this story nevertheless may find an audience among unjaded children. Watercolor illustrations of impish pigs have a certain charm. Additional for large collections.?Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NYCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Where, Oh Where, Is Kipper's Bear

From Publishers Weekly
In this pop-up bedtime tale, Kipper, a floppy-earred dog, searches for his teddy bear in every nook and cranny that he finds. He looks in holes and under blankets; he asks mice, piglets and even the "pinky purple Bleeper People living on the moon" about his teddy's whereabouts. Fortunately for youngsters, Kipper's lack of success means pages of pull-tabs and flaps. The rhyming text is more often a miss than a hit ("This hole in the ground/ with a mound is a mole's!/ But this little home/ (without) is a vole's!") but Inkpen's open white spaces and endearing characters lend a peaceful, childlike charm to this friendly bear hunt, which ends with a neat surprise. Even though Kipper retires to bed empty-handed, readers will locate the teddy right under Kipper's toes (under a lift-the-flap blanket, at the foot of his...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-Reminiscent of Ezra Jack Keats's Snowy Day (Viking, 1962), this satisfying story takes a young dog on a universal winter adventure. Jumping out of his basket with a "Yes! Yes!," Kipper enthusiastically greets the day, where the snow awaits him. Upon discovering the joy of making body images (dog angels?), the pup runs off to find his best friend Tiger, a Scotty. The two spend the day on the hill, leaving behind a giant snow dog. Despite Tiger's repeated warning that a warm wind is coming, their creation lasts for three weeks. This book is fun, pleasurable, and pleasant. The precise, energetic language uses descriptive similes that will augment readers' appreciation of the wintry events. The large typeface is matched with clear, simple watercolor illustrations that are expressive and appealing....

From Publishers Weekly
Inkpen's flair for creating affable animal characters is again evident in this brief tale of a dog who, in a fit of housecleaning, clears his stuffed rabbit, ball, bone and "smelly old blanket" out of his basket. But unable to get comfortable in his empty sleeping quarters, he ventures outdoors to find a new resting place. Kipper attempts to squeeze into a flowerpot, where some wrens have nested; make a nest of sticks, just like the squirrels; snuggle down in the grass, alongside a sheep; and balance, frog-like, on a lily pad. Finally the frustrated pooch rushes indoors, where he hides under "his lovely old smelly blanket" and curls up amid his well-worn possessions. With its large print and short, perky sentences, this warmhearted, there's-no-place-like-home story is well suited for beginning readers. It's also...

Book Review
Kipper, the TV star and well-loved, floppy-eared dog hero of Mick Inkpen's many books, loves bathtime. He blows bubbles, plays with his yellow duck, and--uh-oh--gets shampoo in his eyes! Early readers and reluctant bathers can help this pup wash out his eyes, find his ducky, and track down that bubble bath by pressing out the sturdy cardboard shapes and placing them in the appropriate indented spaces. Part jigsaw, part pop-up, this interactive book will be a hit with young kids, especially those who have snuck peeks at their older siblings' Kipper books, such as Honk! and Kipper's Book of Numbers. This simple yet thoroughly delightful counting book, first published in Great Britain, is guaranteed to tickle your fancy. Kipper, an endearing beagle-like dog, introduces youngsters to two hedgehogs, three hamsters, four hens.… you get the idea. The placement of the animals on the double-page spreads makes it fun--but not too challenging--to count them. Book Review
Kipper and his little friend Arnold are on an alphabet search. It all starts when the young pig Arnold finds an ant. "Aa is for ant. And Arnold." Well, to be perfectly honest, it starts a little earlier, before the book even officially begins, when Kipper the pudgy brown dog tells a zebra, "We won't need you till much, much later." Throughout, as Kipper and Arnold find (and sometimes lose) a buzzing bumblebee, a caterpillar (actually, the caterpillar finds them), a duck, and a menagerie of other alphabetized critters, the earnestly eager zebra appears, ever hopeful that his day in the sun has arrived. "Nn is for No, not now!" Kipper tells him. After "Juice...And a bit of jam, too," "Splish! Splosh! Splash! And six squishy slugs," and V, which is "very, very hard" (when they can't find a volcano, they make a picture...

Book Review
Playtime for Kipper means bouncing balls, painting pictures, and building block towers. But this perky-eared pooch needs a little assistance. Readers are asked to help the earnest little pup find the ball, paint, and blocks. One one page is a brown-and-white dog behind the wheel of a bright red tractor: "Kipper likes driving the tractor. What would you like to drive?" The opposite page features a blank yellow page with an indented, outlined shape of a car. Young readers pop the shiny red, yellow, and blue car out of its spot at the beginning of the book, and press it into the appropriate space. Each page calls for a new activity, and a new press-in object. Kipper is cute as a bug in a rug, and will surely motivate new readers to pursue more Press Out and Play board books, including Kipper's Bedtime, Kipper's Bathtime, and...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-Cuddly Kipper pairs with another canine friend, Tiger, for challenges leading to happy endings in both of these trim tales. In Picnic, the pals encounter rowdy pigs, hungry ants, and wasps before finally settling on an all-apple lunch. The scenes for Thing! are more interesting and humorous, although enterprising readers may be disappointed if they try to reenact the activities. In both stories, loose ends are neatly tied up. Inkpen's language and rhythm sometimes mimic A. A. Milne, attaining a quaint tempo. The illustrations are precious as always, with rounded cartoon figures that always appear to be on the verge of smiling.Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.
