?Khalsa scores a hit with this nostalgic story filled with charm and beautiful color.? ?American Bookseller
Book Description
In May’s town, before there were frozen pizzas, and take-out pizza, and pizzerias, there was hardly anything good to eat. But that all changed when Mrs. Pellegrino came to town. When she arrived, she sniffed the air very hard and became very sad. The children all thought she was homesick, and worked very hard to cheer her up. They put on plays and caught fireflies for her, but she never seemed really happy, because there was “No pizza.” Finally, May and her friends think of a surefire way to cheer up Mrs. Pellegrino, and discover a new delicious food, too.

This picture book reads more like a dog's biography than fiction. The female narrator tells of her once-peaceful life on a farm with her two cats Victoria and Rocky Rainbow. Because the groundhogs were eating all the vegetables, she acquired a dog, named Julian, to chase them. But Julian chased everything: groundhogs, the cats, even his owner's car down bumpy roads. After nearly drowning in a well, Julian became more docile, but he still chased the cats. Only when one cat was lost (and Julian tracked him down) did the narrator's life once again become serene. Khalsa ( Tales of a Gambling Grandma , My Family Vacation ) expands her perspective in this newest book. In her other titles, each picture is like a portrait of a particular moment; in this one, the action unwinds across the top of a spread and then hurls... |

In a diverting tale guaranteed to fulfill any child's fantasies about life in the Old West, a city girl who longs to become a cowboy serves as heroine and narrator. She listens to Lone Ranger radio broadcasts (" 'Hi Ho, Silver! Away!' were practically the first words I ever said."), studies equine paintings and Saturday movie matinees to learn about horses, and buys a raffle ticket to win a trusty steed. "Dreaming of life in the Wild West," she rides a local merchant's mechanical horse; she even makes her own mount on the basement banister. As she sings her beloved cowboy songs, this would-be Dale Evans envisions herself (astride a model horse) in the midst of the lyrics. The late Khalsa's whimsically perceptive cityscapes--a lyrical F.A.O. Schwartz interior, a quintessential suburban backyard that features a... |

In this posthumous publication from Khalsa (The Snow Cat), a giant green cat takes the role traditionally played by a rabbi in the classic folktale of a family that complains of too little space. Here, two siblings say their room is "too small. `I want more space!' each one would shout, And try to toss the other out, into the drafty hall." Every page, save the penultimate, affords the same symmetrical view of a squarish bedroom, a central doorway and twin beds placed foot-to-foot. Green Cat, a teddy-bearish, Gumby-colored fellow, changes their minds. Bit by bit, the cat delivers nonsense items like "A rowboat, a rainbow, A little red calf, Then, just for a laugh, He brought a giraffe." According to the text, the place fills to capacity and gives the children a renewed appreciation for breathing room. But in the... |

Gr 3-5-This flawlessly translated and marvelous story is fully deserving of all the prizes it has garnered over the years since its first English edition in 1986. In it, a young girl tells the story of her immigrant grandmother's life. This spunky woman ran from the Cossacks in Russia, immigrated to Brooklyn, married a plumber, and supplemented the family income by playing poker. Along the way, readers learn about gangster Dutch Schultz, cheating at cards, and drinking beer and celery juice. The story touches on the woman's early years, telescopes through the middle years, and then lingers on her life as the narrator's grandmother. The nostalgic description of their day-to-day activities informs readers of their close relationship. Ultimately, the woman's death is portrayed simply and clearly, much as a child... |

Kindergarten-Grade 3 Vivid memories and vivid colors enliven the story of a young girl on her first long family vacation. Vignette paintings filled with flat colors and staccato patterns evoke the 1950s setting. May, her parents, and her older brother (the one who always wins) set out for a winter vacation in Florida. May is both frightened and excited by the adventure. Khalsa captures this and the delight that a child can take in the smallest details of a new experience. May starts a souvenir collection, coveting motel soap, sugar packs, and postcards. There are also the car games and an undercurrent of sibling rivalry that carry the story along. Khalsa's colors blaze like the southern sun with hot pinks and greens. She packs her pictures with detail. From sightseeing excursions to Parrot Jungle, penny... |

PreSchool-Grade 1 In a rhyme reminiscent of Hoberman's A House Is a House for Me (Viking, 1978) Khalsa has written a delightful bedtime book. A small girl narrates the sleeping habits of family, animals, and others (fireman, cowboy, clown) with the refrain, ``But I never sleep.'' Humor is provided by the variety of places and styles preferred by these sleepers (twin aunts who sleep sitting up, grandma who sleeps in the car, etc.). With each refrain, the child sinks further into the bed until she finally says, ``But I never sleep./ Instead I count sheep.'' Then counting begins, and she is asleep by number 11 (as are the sheep). Illustrations in this small square book are bright and colorful and impishly humorous, matching perfectly a child's conception of the sleeping habits of others.John Philbrook, San... |

This early work of Khalsa's, posthumously published, resonates with the heartfelt emotion of her other titles ( I Want a Dog ; Tales of a Gambling Grandmastet no comma/rl et al.). In the middle of a bleak winter, Elsie prays that God will send her a cat for company in her small house "alone at the edge of the woods." God responds by delivering a feline made of snow, "almost as big as a cow." Although God warns her not to let the cat in the house, Elsie's strong desire for friendship leads her to break the rules, with obvious and disastrous results. This simple premise develops into a more emotionally complicated tale of desire, loss, grief and recovery. Though some may object to the text's portrayal of God as a character, many readers will identify with Elsie's longing for a friend. Khalsa's blocky, nondescript... |

It's hard to know just what to make of this Grandmashe must be the least conventional grandparent in all of children's books. Her granddaughter narrates the tale of how Grandma left Russia and came to Brooklyn, where she married a man who was Dutch Schultz's plumber. That didn't bring in enough money, so Grandma took up poker. "She was very goodsharp-eyed and quick with her hand. She could mark a card with her fingernail, and hide aces in her sleeve." There's no mention, of course, that in some circles this is called cheating, and strangely, the reader doesn't mind too much. Khalsa's paintings are splendidprimitive folk art meets Coney Island. The childlike point-of-view is right on the mark (or the money; Grandma never loses a game). Subject matter aside, this is a wonderfully odd book. Perhaps parents who read... |
