Kindergarten-Grade 3. An Inuit storyteller and a Czechoslovakian artist share their knowledge and love of the Arctic by combining numbers, presented in both English and Inuktitut; visual representations of the numerals 1 through 10, 20, 100, and 1,000,000; and simple descriptions of Arctic animals. Attractive, vibrant watercolor artwork appears on every page. The various tones and shades of white, blue, green, brown, and yellow expertly capture the color and feel of the land and sea in different seasons. The realistically rendered, yet slightly whimsically portrayed animals display motion and purpose. A bordered black-and-white block-print number is superimposed in the top center of each illustration. The narrative connects the hunting activity of one animal to another. For example, one polar bear hunts two... |

Inuit writer Kusugak revisits the tiny Arctic Circle community where he spent his childhood, mining memories of the past in this trio of stories featuring a girl named Agatha. In Agatha's world, everyday life can include waking up in springtime to discover that the family's igloo has collapsed ("She was not inside... anymore; she was outside, in the bright sunshine"). In "Agatha and the Ugly Black Thing," a research blimp flies over the community, frightening the residents, while "Agatha and the Most Amazing Bird" describes the region's many feathered visitors, including a pet raven that returns to Agatha's grandmother each winter. In "Agatha Goes to School," the author pairs forthright comments on the practice of removing Inuit children to convent schools ("The nuns did not make very good mothers and the... |

From Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Melissa and her grandmother both have vivid imaginations; they can see "puddle-sharks" and "ice-people" and know how to "squinch" their eyes to make "the magic eyelash screen." Melissa's parents and brother don't have time or patience for the child's fantasies, but Grandma not only listens and understands, but also regales her with stories of the "olden days." As they walk home one day, the old woman falls. Although Melissa is afraid of the "shadow-wolves," she summons the courage to find help. Unfortunately, while some of the poetic language used to describe the pair's imaginary forays is wonderful, readers will ultimately be lost. At one point, Lohans abruptly introduces Granny Babi (Grandma's grandmother), ruining the flow of the story. Likewise, the "sundog" reference in the text is... |

Following his successful The Rough-Face Girl, a retelling of a Native-American Cinderella story, Rafe Martin introduces The Twelve Months, illus. by Vladyana Langer Krykorka, a Slavic Cinderella tale. Here there is no prince, but the 12 months play the part of the fairy godmother to Marushka, returning once a year to help celebrate the harvest. The artwork evokes the rustic setting and, as the 12 months work their magic, the illustrations light up with yellows and golds, and the characters' faces reveal wonderment. K-Gr 3-A story based on an Inuit legend. Pani's parents have died, and she longs to be a hunter, despite the fact that men are the hunters in her society. She meets a wounded polar bear cub out on the ice. She fishes for him and then is invited to his igloo. His mother rewards Pani's kindness with a bag that contains magic bits of fur that clothe, warm, and feed the child and her grandmother. Bushey's story reflects northern people's traditional respect for the animals that they have depended on for sustenance, but her telling does not set folkloric parameters for what may be a literal-minded audience. Without giving this context, it may be jarring for some to hear the cub and his mother speak to Pani. Krykorka's distinctive paintings are the strongest element in this story. The artist again uses her talent... |
