Starred Review. Grade 1-5–These 15 limericks are accompanied by wonderful pictures that mirror their consistency and their surprise. Each poem is given a spread, with the words on the left (inside a fancy, scroll-like box set against patterns reminiscent of old wallpaper) and the illustration on the right. Fisher's artwork is technically remarkable; she photographs scenes made from an assemblage of old toys and figurines, cutouts of old prints, patterned paper, and hand-drawn figures, all arranged and composed to simulate a look of almost palpable depth. The "Old Man of Berlin," for example, who was baked in a cake, is shown with a paper leg sticking straight out of what appears to be a real dessert. The artist has a great feel for a mix of elegance and goofiness, of Victorianism and modernism. Her...

From Publishers Weekly
"A was once an apple pie, / Pidy / Widy / Tidy / Pidy / Nice insidy / Apple pie." So begins Lear's alphabet, a beguiling collection of verses that stretch poetry, language and meaning but wisely opt for silliness instead of outright nonsense. The result is a rhythmic, lilting progression full of simple, childlike images and the sort of fanciful wordplay that children revel in. Lacome's ( Funny Business ; Hocus Pocus ) bright, bold illustrations are a happy match, containing hints of whimsy that complement without overpowering the playfulness of the rhymes. They have a clean, crisp, yet varied design and a quietly folksy feel. Ages 2-up. Silent Spring

Format: Paperback
ISBN: 0618249060

Book Review
Silent Spring, released in 1962, offered the first shattering look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists. Rachel Carson's book focused on the poisons from insecticides, weed killers, and other common products as well as the use of sprays in agriculture, a practice that led to dangerous chemicals to the food source. Carson argued that those chemicals were more dangerous than radiation and that for the first time in history, humans were exposed to chemicals that stayed in their systems from birth to death. Presented with thorough documentation, the book opened more than a few eyes about the dangers of the modern world and stands today as a landmark work. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Kites Sail High: A Book about Verbs (World of Language Series)
Author: Ruth Heller Book Review
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 0698113896

From Publishers Weekly
Heller's newest concept book explicates and celebrates verbs of all kinds, in ebullient verses which themselves sail and soar. As in her previous works, the verses are accompanied by bold, gaily colored graphics that are especially striking for their skillful use of pattern and design. More ambitious in scope than her earlier books, however, this one attains a level of textual and conceptual complexity that may, by the end, leave its intended audience behind. The adroit but increasingly difficult verses addressing such points as tense, mood and voice may be of more interest to a parent or teacher than to a child, for whom the book's simpler, beginning pages are likely to hold more direct appeal. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable...

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5–A semi-swell collection of 16 poems celebrating books, reading, language, and libraries. Subjects range from Otto the Flea (who writes, of course, his "Ottobiography") to "The Big-Word Girl" (who takes her Webster's to the movies) to "Great, Good, Bad" books ("A bad book owes to many trees/A forest of apologies"). The brief selections encompass various forms, from an eight-word acrostic to haiku to rhyming quatrains and couplets. The tone is generally light, with the last few entries turning more to wonder and metaphor ("A good book is a kind/Of person with a mind/Of her own..."). Usually printed one per spread, the poems are accompanied by richly dark artwork. The thickly applied acrylic paint and mixed-media illustrations are sometimes reminiscent of the work of David Shannon, with a...

Book Review
Edward Lear's nonsense poem about two unlikely sweethearts--an elegant owl and a beautiful cat--has found a perfect match in artist Jan Brett. She traveled to the Caribbean (the land where the Bong-tree grows, perhaps?) to research her illustrations as well as the settings, costume details, plants, and fish native to the area. Readers can follow an illustrated subplot of two yellow fish who also fall in love under the pea-green boat. A charming treatment of a classic children's poem. Lear is best known for his owl and pussy cat poem (you remember--they went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat); the nonsensical writings here are likely to be less familiar to listeners, though they share the poet's fondness for rhythm, repetition, and word play that sound right but makes no sense if you stop and think about them for very long. Lear likes to make up odd places (Lake Pipple-Popple) and funny names (Quangle-Wangle), which narrator Claire Bloom's lovely voice glides over as she wends her way through his stories and verses. The fate of all the children in "Seven Families" is a bit of a downer; we like the more upbeat poems better. J.C.G. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

From Publishers Weekly
When Uncle Satie, a debonair cat-about-town, comes to visit his niece and nephew, he regales the youngsters with tales of his escapades in Gay Paree. Satie ran with quite a crowd, it seems--numbering among his friends and acquaintances Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and a host of others. (A key on the back flap identifies, rather coyly, the array of dazzling guests pictured at one of Stein's salons--Zelda F., Josephine B., James J., Isadora D. and Ernest H. Children will certainly not know--and may not care about--their famous surnames.) When a fight erupts over whether Pablo or Henri (Picasso and Matisse) is the greater artist, Satie is chosen to referee. The story, with its gentle message of individual merit and the folly of trying to judge apples against oranges, has a certain charm. The subtle shadings of...

Why Things Bite Back: Technology and the Revenge of Unintended Consequences
Author: Edward Tenner Book Review

Book Review
If it can go wrong, it will--thus Murphy's Law. Science journalist Edward Tenner looks more closely at this eternal verity, named after a U.S. Air Force captain who, during a test of rocket-sled deceleration, noticed that critical gauges had been improperly set and concluded, "If there's more than one way to do a job and one of those ways will end in disaster, then somebody will do it that way." Tenner concurs, and he gives us myriad case studies of how technological fixes often create bigger problems than the ones they were meant to solve in the first place. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics, by way of example, has yielded hardier strains of bacteria and viruses that do not respond to pharmaceutical treatment; the wide-scale use of air conditioning in cities has raised the outdoor temperature in some places by as much...
