From AudioFile
Who else could come up with a plan to save two friends lost in a cave? To help assimilate a new Greek boy into turn-of-the-century Utah culture? To help a friend overcome his disability? Why, the Great Brain, of course. The adventures of T.D. (Tom), as told by his admiring younger brother J.D., are as fresh and entertaining today as they were 35 years ago. And Ron McLarty's narration adds that subtle touch of Mid-Western ambiance. The strength of his narration comes from his storyteller's ability to build each adventure with suspense, warmth, humor, youthful indignation, and the matter-of-fact tone that Tom maintains through each crisis. With strong and confident male roles, this is a great selection for higher elementary grades, and especially for boys. W.L.S. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright... |

With minimal text and funny illustrations to spell out every new situation, the book shows the Critter family saying no to everything Little Critter wants to do. He can't keep frogs in the tub. He can't help paint the house. Finally, mad at the world, Little Critter announces he will run away. When pals come by and ask him to come and play baseball, our young hero's mood quickly changes. He grabs his bat and heads off for the game, telling himself he can run away another day if he is still so mad.

Book Description
Little Critter's class is learning about good manners. LC explains the list compiled by the class of things to say and do that are considered good manners, and when it's appropriate to say and do them, like saying: please, thank you, excuse me; covering your mouth when you sneeze, keeping your elbows off the table when you eat, sharing, etc. He's surprised that some things are considered good manners (like the elbows thing) and has a hard time with others, like saying sorry when he does something wrong. LC describes a day when he tries to remember his manners, sometimes succeeding and sometimes not. The class keeps track of how members behave and LC is pleased to discover that he's doing pretty well. This is a low-key treatment of the subject, filled with sly humor and illustrated in Mercer Mayer's... |

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2 In one or two lines of text per page and large, boldly colored illustrations, Mercer tells the tale of a little boy who is sure that there is an alligator under his bed. Getting no sympathy from his parents who ``never saw it,'' he forms a plan of attack. He leaves a trail of food from his bed through the house to the garage door. He then follows behind as the alligator gobbles up the goodies, fresh vegetables, fruit, and even ``the last piece of pie,'' making its way to the garage. The boy then locks the door. The last page shows the note he leaves for his father, telling him that there's an alligator in the garage and to wake him up ``if you need help.'' Children will relate to this young hero's triumph over normal childhood fears, and they'll love his clever solution to his problem. The... |
