K-Gr 1 Matthew was having a silly day. Even his mother called him a turkey and said, ``You're much too silly today.'' He digs a hole in his mother's garden to trap the midnight turkeys. That night when the turkeys follow Matthew's arrows to the hole, they do indeed jump in, now willingly trapped with Matthew's comic books and toys. After eating pizza with the turkeys, Matthew invites them to his house and eats them for breakfast. Silly cartoon illustrations accompany the plodding narrative. There's nothing here to make children care about Matthew's adventure. Much better fantasy adventures for the picture book crowd are Dick Gackenbach's Mag the Magnificent (1985) and Harry and the Terrible Whatzit (1978, both Clarion). Stick to these and to others in which the imagination is challenged. Sandra L. Miller,... |

From Booklist
The offbeat series set at the beginning of the previous century and featuring a pair of shipboard detectives continues with its seventh installment. The format remains unchanged: George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield are working onboard an ocean liner, posing as a couple of eligible singles (in fact they're happily married) while they search for foul play. The characters they encounter are the usual assortment of upper-class snobs and suspicious hangers-on. And the setting continues to move from one ritzy ocean liner to another. And yet, like any episode of Murder, She Wrote, it all feels different from the stories that preceded it. Allen really is a master of the escapist mystery, and his secret appears to be this: the books revel in their frothiness. Everything is just a little more Technicolor than real... |

That night Matthew hears what he thinks is rain but is actually penny precipitation, and the midnight money van man is willing to split the proceeds if Matthew helps him clean up. With their money, the two proceed to the Midnight Mall, where a cartoonish assortment of characters from two previous books about Matthew are also shopping for their mothers. Punk-rocker pigeons, turkeys buying cushions, and a mysterious moose cavort on one busy page. The ring Matthew purchases for about two million dollars is lost under his bed that night, but no matterMatthew finds it in his cereal box. Or a reasonable facsimile. Children will enjoy close up the details in these... |

From Publishers Weekly
Steele's trilogy about human settlers on an alien planet facing practical and moral challenges comes to a fitting close. The Coyote Federation is a healthy democracy now, but its citizens still depend on the products of Earth's technology. Earth, meanwhile, is sliding into ecological disaster and craves raw materials and room for emigrants. The two sides need each other, but it's unclear whether people have learned enough—or can control themselves well enough—to avoid making selfish little decisions like the ones that devastated humanity's birthplace. Shifting deftly among several characters, Hugo-winner Steele respects the various viewpoints keeping the debate fluid, but he also makes plausible that opposing individuals could grudgingly learn to respect each other enough to modify their rigid plans.... |

Review
“A companion to The Works of Allen Ginsberg, 1941-1994: A Descriptive Bibliography, this volume lists translations of the poet's work as well as biographical and critical studies about him...Researchers will find the bibliography particularly valuable because many of the sources it covers will not be found in traditional print or electronic indexes. Morgan's chronological organization enhances the works' usefulness by providing an overview of Ginsberg's life and critical reception. A prodigious achievement, both volmes of this meticulously researched bibliography belong in all serious literature collections.”–Choice

Grade 1-3–Fans of Matthew and his midnight adventures may recognize this story that has been adapted from a picture-book format to an easy reader. The original artwork has been reused, as has part of the text, but both are now divided into seven short chapters. The story begins with Matthew playing pirate and worrying about his overdue library book about buccaneers. When he awakes at midnight to a busload of pirates in his front yard, he embarks on a wacky trip involving a pizza delivery van, librarians, turkeys, and lawyers, as well as a city hall budget meeting to save library funding. While children will enjoy Matthew's playacting, the hodgepodge of characters and the plot that borders on the absurd may prove both confusing and a bit of a challenge to novice readers.
