PreS-Gr. 2. As it turns out, if you give a pig a pancake, she'll eventually want a party--with balloons, a party dress, and guests. In the latest of the best-selling demanding-animal-meets-long-suffering-human series, the small pig protagonist needs as much activity and as many supplies as ever. This time, there's a search for friends, which leads to a street fair, a game of hide-and-seek, a sleepover, and the necessity of linens for a pillow fight. A blanket fortress needs balloons decorations. Balloons! They scream out for a party. . . . In Bond's crisp, cheerful illustrations, the pig's joie de vivre is contagious, except, that is, to her expressionless, ultra-accommodating little girl caretaker. Even considering its deliberate "if-then" pattern, the story feels loosely hinged, but young fans of the series will squeal...

Book Review
What a happy, happy place the world would be if daddies always did all the things they do best: bake you a magnificent birthday cake, give you a piggyback ride, hold you when you're feeling sad. In Laura Joffe Numeroff (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie) and Lynn Munsinger's picture book world, they do indeed! Munsinger's adorable (but not cutesy) watercolors depict a hippo papa, fox father, bunny daddy, and more top pops, giving their little ones "lots and lots of love." Terrific detail and brief text ("Daddies can help you make a garden grow") create just the right mix in this reassuring bedtime read aloud. In one spread, the goat dad offers his daughter cough syrup and a teddy bear as she hunkers down in her tissue-strewn sickbed; in another, a bunny's father helps her blow-dry the family dog after a bath. Mommy...

Book Review
Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? Well, if you're going to go around giving an exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd best be prepared to do one or two more favors for it before your day is through. For example, he'll certainly need a glass of milk to wash down that cookie, won't he? And you can't expect him to drink the milk without a straw, can you? By the time our hero is finished granting all the mouse's very urgent requests--and cleaning up after him--it's no wonder his head is becoming a bit heavy. Laura Joffe Numeroff's tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the giggle-generator category. But concerned parents can rest assured, there's even a little education thrown in for good measure: underneath the folly rest valuable lessons about cause and effect....

Book Review
"If you give a moose a muffin, he'll want some jam to go with it." So begins the most logical silliness to be found anywhere--at least since Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrator Felicia Bond's If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Readers will follow a young boy and his voracious visitor through a series of antlered antics: jam reveries and puppet shows and big messes. It all makes perfect sense, really, once you stop to think about it. What moose wouldn't want to borrow a sweater when it's cold outside? And why shouldn't the loose button on the sweater remind him of his grandmother? Bond's cleverly detailed, witty illustrations perfectly complement Numeroff's deadpan style. Through just a few deft words and brush strokes, the reader gets a real sense of the unique personalities of the two characters. Children will relate easily to...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-Sherman Crunchley, a police officer in Biscuit City, has a family tradition to follow. He is to become chief of police when his father retires next month. The problem is, though, that this dog doesn't want the position but doesn't want to disappoint his dad. The only thing he likes about the job now is wearing the hat. The truth of the matter is that hats are the love of his life. He is pictured throughout the book wearing a variety of different and outlandish headgear ranging from the simple police hat to a doghouse hat. He tries a variety of methods to communicate this fact to his father, including checking out How to Say No from the library and ordering a video tape entitled Must Say No. He even tries seeing a hypnotist. Finally, he gets an idea. He fashions special hats for all of the...

Book Review
"If you give a pig a pancake, she'll want some syrup to go with it. You'll give her some of your favorite maple syrup. She'll probably get all sticky, so she'll want to take a bath." You get the idea. Baths lead to bubbles, bubbles lead to rubber ducks, rubber ducks lead to wanting a trip to the farm. If You Give a Pig a Pancake is a delightful exploration of the scenario "if you give an inch, they'll take a mile." But who could refuse the whims of this adorable piglet? Not us, and certainly not the pig's young caretaker. Parents will feel a familiar twinge as they witness the pig's increasingly elaborate demands, and kids will be delighted that the story circles back around to the original pancake. Laura Numeroff and illustrator Felicia Bond--well-loved creators of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Moose a...

Book Review
Ah, mice. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Laura Numeroff and illustrator Felicia Bond, creators of the bestselling picture books If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, are back with If You Take a Mouse to School. As you might imagine, there are great risks in bringing your mouse to school. For starters, he'll ask you for your lunchbox. And then a sandwich. And a snack for later. Still not satisfied, he'll want to participate in everything from math to soccer. Children and adults alike will revel in the hilarious, very cute illustrations of the mouse in the classroom: hanging from the top corner of the blackboard to spell (aptly enough) "precocious" and "adrenaline," writing "'Goodnight Mouse' by Mouse," sitting inside the boy's open backpack playing with a yo-yo, etc. This...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1?An appealing flip book that presents mirrored texts. The first half shows a mother bear, pig, mouse, elephant, and porcupine engaging in everyday activities with her children. Readers learn that Mommies can build a snowman with you, bake a birthday cake, "sew the loose button on your teddy bear," watch the sunset, read a story, or "hold you when you're feeling sad." But best, "Mommies can give you lots and lots of love." Flip the book and read that Daddies can do the same thing. Munsinger's winsome watercolor depictions of the animals are warm and humorous. A perfect cuddly bedtime or storytime read-aloud choice, this title practically begs preschool or early elementary teachers to help children write and illustrate their own versions to present to their parents for holiday or any-day...

From Publishers Weekly
This companion to the immensely likable What Mommies Do Best/ What Daddies Do Best is another two-in-one book: after finishing "What Grandmas Do Best," readers can flip the book over to find "What Grandpas Do Best." Again, Numeroff's straightforward text is identical for both segments (both grandmas and grandpas can "play hide-and-seek, make you a hat, and take you for a walk"). The fun lies in Munsinger's magnificently anthropomorphized animals, and the way each grandparent puts his or her spin on the words: Grandma Cat knits her grandkitten a fetching snow hat, while Grandpa Guinea Pig fashions a chapeau out of newspapers, tape and glue. Perhaps because her lead characters are senior citizens, this book is more subdued in tone than its predecessor; Numeroff seems not to have mined her considerable imagination...

PreSchool-Grade 2-Although the Spanish translation of the popular 1985 original fails to impart the same silliness that makes the English-language edition so popular, this is a title that people will probably want to own. The translation is competently done and the illustrations of the demanding mouse are as endearing as ever. Numeroff's book has become a cultural referent that no child growing up in this country should miss. A must have for bookstores and public libraries. Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers

From Publishers Weekly
Despite the catchy canine title, Numeroff and Mathieu's picture book is not about Man's Best Friends. Rather, the author and illustrator work together to pull off what could be the antithesis of a nonsense rhyme--a verse that derives its kid-appeal by its apparent sensibleness. But as the text intones various truths ("Dogs don't wear sneakers / And pigs don't wear hats / And dresses look silly / On Siamese cats), the illustrations serve up irreverent contradictions: a pack of well-shod pooches prances its way through a "Dog Days Marathon"; the aforesaid pigs and cats don lavish costumes for a production of "The Pigs of Penzance." One particularly frolicsome scene ("Fish don't eat bagels") shows a pair of hatted fish perched on stools at an underwater diner, one in the process of "schmearing" his bagel. Mathieu's...
