For anyone who ever doubted it, Todd Parr is here to tell us all that it's okay to be different. With his signature artistic style, featuring brightly colored, childlike figures outlined in heavy black, Parr shows readers over and over that just about anything goes. From the sensitive ("It's okay to be adopted"--the accompanying illustration shows a kangaroo with a puppy in her pouch) to the downright silly ("It's okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub"), kids of every shape, size, color, family makeup, and background will feel included in this gentle, witty book. In this simple, playful celebration of diversity, Parr doesn't need to hammer readers over the head with his message. Parr is well known for his funky feel-good titles, including Things That Make You Feel Good/Things That Make You Feel Bad,... |

Kindergarten-Grade 2–For children, the concept of peace can be a difficult one to understand, and Parr makes an admirable attempt to explain it. He relates the notion to making new friends, listening to different kinds of music, and helping your neighbor. Where he stretches it a bit is with sentiments such as, "Peace is wishing on a star" or "…watching it snow," even if the images are tranquil. Bright primary colors and bold black outlines define cartoonlike characters (animal and human) with smiling features. A helpful and engaging book that's sure to spark discussion.–Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Grade 1-4-In this affectionate and humorous pair of books, Parr explores the differences among grandparents: Some grandmas have a lot of purses; Some grandpas can wiggle their ears. He also notes their similarities: Some grandmas live with a grandpa; Some grandpas live with a grandma. The books end with a short message about grandparents and a reminder to tell them that you love them. The artist's skillful use of bright neon, supersaturated colors, thickly outlined simple figures, and brief text combine to make the books lots of fun. Good additions to any collection and wonderful choices for a storytime.-Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Although some mommies drive motorcycles, and others drive minivans; some mommies go fishing while others go shopping, all mommies want their children to be who they are. That's Todd Parr's story, and he's sticking with it (as reinforced by his It's Okay to Be Different, This Is My Hair, and lots more funky, friendly picture books). Using his trademark style of brightly colored stick figures, with bold outlined smiley faces for heads, Parr portrays a world of diversity and peace in his simple, esteem-boosting titles. Moms are celebrated here (naturally, you'll find dads in The Daddy Book), in all their traditional, eccentric, athletic, hip, nurturing glory. Each spread shows moms doing their thing: dancing moms opposite swimming moms, short-hair moms next to big-hair moms, and work-at-home moms across from... |

PreSchool-Grade 2-As he did in The Mommy Book and The Daddy Book (both Little, Brown, 2002), Parr introduces children to an array of families. Whimsical illustrations featuring neon colors and figures outlined in black show big ones and small ones, and families that look alike and relatives who look just like their pets. The art features both human and animal figures; thus, pigs depict both a family that likes to be clean, and one that likes to be messy. Some families include stepmoms, stepdads, stepsisters, or stepbrothers; some adopt children. Other families have two moms or two dads, while some children have only one parent. Interspersed with the differences among families are the ways they are alike: all like to hug each other, are sad when they lose someone they love, enjoy celebrating special days... |

PreSchool-Grade 1–Otto is back in his next big adventure–heading to school. Starting with his favorite breakfast, cereal, juice, and a banana split, the pup faces a child's typical first-day worries but has a good time when he settles in. His lessons include learning to wag his tail without knocking things over; finding out that shoes are for wearing and not chewing; and sharing toys and games–all capped with the refrain of Good dog, Otto! Parr uses his trademark bold primary colors, blocky simple characters, and heavy black line to illustrate this tale. He keeps the focus on the fun while sharing insights on this new experience.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Whether they're working at home or working far away, teaching you how to walk or how to ride a skateboard, wearing suits or wearing two different socks, daddies can be pretty cool. With childlike smiling stick figures, bold, brilliant color, and upbeat text, picture-book creator Todd Parr celebrates the diverse, wonderful world of fathers in The Daddy Book. As in his Mommy Book, Parr focuses on the differences between individual parents ("Some daddies make cookies. Some daddies stop for doughnuts."), but brings it all together every few pages with lines like, "All daddies love to kiss and hug you!" or "All daddies like to watch you sleep!" Parr's quirky artwork and eternally optimistic--yet never saccharine--books are truly irresistible, for both grownups and kids. Don't miss any of his friendly, esteem-boosting... |

Book Review
In an ideal world, a primer on feeling good just wouldn't be necessary. But thankfully, the jubilantly goofy Todd Parr knows that we could all use a tip or two from time to time, no matter how old we are. Just as he did in Do's and Don'ts, The Okay Book, and his other titles (16 and counting), Parr keeps it super simple, with fat lines, bold colors, and a repetitively cheery, often silly message. His words get some smiles here and there ("Brushing your hair with a lion feels good," "Making sounds like a monkey feels good"), but it's the vibrant, uncluttered, kid-style illustrations and the way that Parr juxtaposes them with the text that makes this book such fun. "Making a new friend" accompanies a fat, happy pig holding hands with a skunk sporting a thin red smile; "Watching your grandma and grandpa dance... |

Book Review
Best friends can be pretty remarkable, especially if they're anything like Todd Parr's pals. For him, a best friend is someone who "will tell you funny jokes even if you blow milk out of your nose when you laugh." Best friends "will forgive you even if you step on their paw." And best friends "will keep in touch with you even if you move a million miles away." This delightful, bright book sets high (if sometimes silly) standards for friendship. Even with the exceptionally goofy lines ("Best friends will share their pizza with you even if you want to wear the pepperoni"), the point is well made: friendship is unconditional and terrifically important. Kids of all ages will enjoy the bright colors, bold lines, and unambiguous, fun message. Parr's little square books with big color and cheerful commentary on life... |

PreSchool-Grade 1–Parr highlights some of the advantages of reading, such as learning how to make a pizza or finding your favorite animal at the zoo. The cartoon illustrations are bold and cheerful. Once again, the artist embraces a wild palette with pink rabbits, a purple elephant, and green- , yellow- , and blue-faced people. The art includes many fun details, such as labels, signs, and an odd assortment of objects sitting in the freezer next to the TV dinner. Such details encourage children and adults to move beyond the text and discuss the pictures together. A few of the pages are less successful than others. For example, the accompanying illustration for you can imagine you are a brave princess… shows a traditional damsel in distress, yelling for help from her tower. This predictability is... |

Book Review
In a child's world, there are big things and then there are little things: big tree, little leaf; big cake, little cookie; big mommy, little baby. Todd Parr's BIG & little, an adorable companion volume to another study in opposites, Black & White, celebrates size. Just small enough for a toddler to hold, and tough enough to withstand toothy attacks, this little board book is full of big ideas. Young readers (or viewers) compare trucks to tricycles and skyscrapers to doghouses as they identify boldly drawn objects against bright, colorful backgrounds. Simple, childlike illustrations appeal to young eyes, never detracting from the task at hand. Each two-page spread shows a big something, with the word "BIG" printed on top and the name of the object below, and a little something, with "little" above, the name... |
