The talented husband-and-wife team behind Duke Ellington turns to jazz biography once again, this time showcasing the First Lady of Song. Narrated by Scat Cat Monroe, a feline in a zoot suit, the book spins four "tracks" on Fitzgerald's life, from her childhood in Yonkers performing on street corners, to her discovery at a 1934 talent contest at the legendary Apollo Theatre to her move into the "ping-pong rhythms" of bebop. Whether swinging at the Savoy "to a house packed tighter than the A train" or breaking the racial barrier at many clubs ("Ella's popularity showed them that a true star has no color it just shines"), the singer's career is expertly framed to fit a picture book format. The prose, while occasionally labored, swings to a syncopated beat and piles on the synesthesia ("Ella rolled out a tune sweet... |

The Pinkneys (Alvin Ailey; Seven Candles for Kwanzaa) continue their impressive collaboration with this memorable portrait of Benjamin Banneker, a free African American born in 1731. Lucid text and striking illustrations, rendered on scratchboard and colored with oil paint, shape a solid, sober tribute of a vigorous thinker, a self-taught mathematician and scientist, a man concerned with civil rights. This persevering man labored by day on his Maryland tobacco farm; by night he observed the sky and learned astronomy. Producing an almanac-something no African American had ever done-he tried in vain to find a publisher. In 1790, the president of the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery helped him secure publication-but it was so late in the year that Banneker had to create an entirely new set of... |

Kindergarten-Grade 2–No one is more adept at avoiding bedtime than Cutie LaRue. After being driven to distraction, the child's exasperated parents find a magical remedy for those sleepless nights. They order a talking Night Owl doll from the Trusty Trinket toy catalog. After Mom and Dad leave the bedroom, Night Owl comes to life and takes Cutie to the Dreamland Nightclub, where the party never stops. It's a rollicking good time finding out whether or not Cutie's shenanigans with the Slumber Brothers, Satin Doll, and Sandman will ever tucker her out. Bright watercolor spreads are a perfect canvas for Brian Pinkney's playful trademark pen-and-ink illustrations. A satisfying read-aloud for little insomniacs.–Ajoke' T. I. Probably no other black cowboy has been as celebrated as Bill Pickett. A rodeo star, he has been honored with a postage stamp and has been the subject of a handful of books, including Bill Pickett, Bulldogger: The Biography of a Black Cowboy and Guts: Legendary Black Rodeo Cowboy Bill Pickett. Add to that list the children's book Bill Pickett: Rodeo Ridin' Cowboy by Andrea Pinkney. No matter how you feel about rodeo, it's hard not to admire Pickett, who was known to bring an unruly steer to its knees by taking a bite out of the animal's upper lip.

Gregory, in her first book for children, kicks off The Cheetah Girlz series, aimed at African-American preteens, with a choppy tale that tries hard to be hip. At center stage is narrator Galleria Garibaldi, a 14-year-old whose 250-pound mother looks like a "Black opera diva" and whose father is "Eye-talian... from Bologna, Italy." It's the eve of her enrollment in Manhattan's Fashion Industries High, which she'll attend with her best friend, Chanel ("a blend of Dominican and Puerto Rican on her mother's side, Jamaican and Cuban on her father's side--and sneaky-deaky through and through!"). When the pair hooks up with three other girls to form a singing group, they unleash their "growl power" and discover the "jiggy jungle: that magical, cheetah-licious place inside of every dangerous, scary, crowded city where... |

Book Review
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, "King of the Keys," was born on April 29, 1899, in Washington, D.C. "He was a smooth-talkin', slick-steppin', piano-playin' kid," writes master wordsmith Andrea Pinkney in the rhythmic, fluid, swinging prose of this excellent biography for early readers. It was ragtime music that first "set Duke's fingers to wiggling." He got back to work and taught himself to "press on the pearlies." Soon 19-year-old Duke was playing compositions "smoother than a hairdo sleeked with pomade" at parties, pool halls, country clubs, and cabarets. Skipping from D.C. to 1920s Harlem, "the place where jazz music ruled," Duke and his small band called the Washingtonians began performing in New York City clubs, including the Cotton Club, where Duke... |

In their first children's book collaboration, this markedly talented husband-and-wife team offers a warm profile of dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey (1931-1989), whose dance company lives on today. The author deftly combines elements of fiction and biography, intertwining Ailey's alleged thoughts and conversations with facts about his childhood, his introduction to the world of dance in Los Angeles during the mid-1940s and his founding of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City in 1958. This effective amalgam of genres easily draws the reader into Ailey's life, lending it appeal for those previously unacquainted with the legendary artist as well as for young fans eager to learn how Ailey launched his impressive career. Matching the finesse of the writing are Brian Pinkney's signature... |

Pinkney (Silent Thunder) presents eloquent portraits of 10 intrepid African-American activists for the causes of abolition, women's rights and civil rights. Exploring these individuals' childhoods as well as their accomplishments as adults, the author smoothly distills biographical information so as to hold the attention of young readers. Her selection of subjects includes the prominent (Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Shirley Chisholm) as well as such lesser-knowns as Fannie Lou Hamer, an indefatigable campaigner for African-Americans' right to vote. Pinkney's writing is spiced with colloquialisms ("She didn't shy back for nobody," she says of Sojourner Truth) and useful imagery (describing this same crusader's delivery of her renowned "Ain't I a woman?" speech, the author notes, "She was the... |
