PreSchool-Grade 1–A superb choice for emergent readers. The book's simple elegance is eye-catching and will appeal both to children who are eager to read as well as to those who are struggling. Illustrations of everyday playthings, wearing apparel, foods, and animals are presented one to a page, with the word for each item written in clear, lower-case black letters. The vibrant colors used for a truck, a slice of watermelon, a raincoat, etc., draw children's attention to each picture, with great anticipation of what is to come next. The sheer simplicity of text and art is the beauty of this title, making it a must-have for all collections.–Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Book Review
When Joseph's favorite overcoat gets old and worn, he makes a jacket out of it. When the jacket is more patches than jacket, Joseph turns it into a vest. When the vest's number is up, Joseph makes a scarf. This thrifty industry continues until there's nothing left of the original garment. But clever Joseph manages to make something out of nothing! (And that's the foreshadowed moral of the story.) In today's throwaway world, Joseph's old-fashioned frugality is a welcome change. Based on a Yiddish song from Simms Taback's youth (lyrics and music reproduced on the last page), the book is filled with rhythms and arresting colors that will delight every reader. As more and more holes appear in Joseph's coat, die-cut holes appear on the pages, hinting at each next manifestation. The illustrations are striking, created with... |

PreSchool-Grade 3. From cover to moral (never swallow a horse), this cleverly illustrated version of an old folk favorite will delight children. Each page is full of details and humorous asides, from the names of different types of birds, to a recipe for spider soup, to the rhyming asides from the spectating animals. As for the old lady, with her toothy grin and round bloodshot eyes, she looks wacky enough to go so far as to swallow a horse. A die-cut hole allows readers to see inside her belly, first the critters already devoured and, with the turn of the page, the new animal that will join the crowd in her ever-expanding stomach. The pattern of the lady's dress, with its patchwork of bright, torn colored paper pasted on black, is used as the background motif for the words. The text is handwritten on vivid... |

Grade 3-6–These 13 tales range in humor from slapstick to ridiculous to poignant. Each story includes a Yiddish word or two followed by a simple translation and ends with a saying, e.g., Not every thought is worth expressing; Everyone has his own craziness. The detail-filled cartoon illustrations include an occasional piece of realism–a tidbit of matzo; a snippet of cloth; little faces cut from photographs, with beards, hats, and rosy cheeks painted on; pieces of patterned paper that form a scarf or trim clothing. The stories take place in the small Jewish villages that existed in Eastern Europe during the late-19th- and early-20th centuries. Mixed-media paintings with predominantly gold backgrounds, type that looks hand printed, and a riot of color and pattern on each expertly designed page... |

Caldecott Medalist Taback (Joseph Had a Little Overcoat) offers a spirited interpretation of this cumulative rhyme. From the very start as endpapers reveal a variety of pencil-drawn houses with yellowing real estate ads as captions the artist fills these busy pages with abundant details and diversions. The first spread introduces Jack's home on the left, with the text on the right, and the word "house" in eye-popping collage type. Ancillary images and asides accompany the vividly hued mixed-media illustrations and hand-lettered text that introduce the invading characters. On the spread announcing the cheese, for example, Taback reveals nine varieties (one of which "lay in the house that Jack built") and ranks them according to their pungency ("Not so smelly"; "Really stinky"). Superimposed on the image of "the... |

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Riddle lovers will groan with delight at some of these riddles, find a few difficult to understand, and simply not be amused by others. The most successful entries feature clever word play, but some seem forced, e.g., "What snake has scales, a long tongue, and flies? (a dead snake!)." A number of selections will definitely need some explanation if beginning readers are to understand the humor: the snake who loves arithmetic is a "good little adder." The best thing about the book is the cleverly drawn, lively cartoon illustrations. Long, colorful snakes form borders framing the text and picture for each riddle. A drawback is the placement of the answers on the same page as the riddles. It's hard to reach the calibre of Marc Brown's Spooky Riddles (Random, 1983), and this one falls short... |

Grade 1-4-- Those who enjoyed Snakey Riddles (1990), Fishy Riddles (1983), and Buggy Riddles (1986, all Dial) will line up for this easy reader. The riddles are sure to bring groans of enjoyment to primary-grade children and even bigger groans from adults who share them. The book is filled with clever word play and humor. The brightly colored cartoons, many of which are set against the black backdrops of outer space, are just right. The elephant in a space suit is a classic. Answers are given directly below the riddles, which unfortunately doesn't allow readers to ponder the possiblities before discovering the punch lines. Still, this is a very funny, well-illustrated collection that is attractively formatted. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IACopyright 1992 Reed Business Information,... |

Book Review
For children who are passionate about machines, especially the really big ones, Road Builders, cheerfully illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Simms Taback, is a wonderful find. Youngsters are introduced to the vast assortment of fascinating machines involved in building a road, and to the industrious crew of folks who operate these mammoth vehicles. Step by step, a road is born: dirt is scooped away by the power shovel, bulldozer, and backhoe, then the grader smoothes the ground as the other trucks arrive with cement and asphalt. Finally the power roller packs it all down, and the "striper" lays down the lines at the center of the road. But you'll have to read the book to figure out what the cherry picker does! Boldly illustrated with bright, saturated colors, Road Builders is a visually dynamic introduction to the... |
