It's hard to imagine anyone--child or adult--getting his or her fill of the indefatigable Max, who always manages to get his way no matter what. Here, the bad-news bunny and sister Ruby go to a department store to replace Max's beloved, stained overalls, which are held up by a safety pin. They have five dollars for a new pair of pants, but Max would rather spend the money on a more exotic item. "Dragon shirt," he keeps insisting in his delightfully pithy, ever-determined manner. While Ruby is trying on dresses, Max slips out of the changing room and wanders into Boys' Sportswear, where he finds a rack of shirts emblazoned with a dragon's face. By the time Ruby catches up with her impish brother, he has dribbled ice cream all over the dragon shirt--which happens to cost exactly five dollars. Max wins again, as... |

PreSchool-Grade 2 - The infectious song from Guys and Dolls is delightfully celebrated in this illustrated version. Two endearing ducklings, one wearing overalls and the other in a pink skirt and headband, court one another while going through a busy day on the farm. The vibrantly colored single- and double-page paintings are packed with humorous details. For example, one scene shows the male duck driving a pickup truck while the female rides in the back with a load of pumpkins. One bump later, she and the pumpkins are lifted into the air. Next, she drives the truck while he rides in the back. For the lyrics "Barrel and a heap/and I'm talkin' in my sleep/about you./About you?/About you!/My heart is leapin'!/I'm having trouble sleepin'!" the illustrations show the duck lying wide awake in his bed, and then... |

PreSchool-Wells's latest story about Max and his sister Ruby is a board book with 14 touch-and-feel surprises, including a terrycloth towel, sandpaper crumbs, and a furry teddy. At bedtime, the toddler's red rubber elephant is thirsty, so Max gives it a glass of water, which promptly spills on his outer-space pajamas. Thus begins a series of events in which the young rabbit needs to change his pajamas three times. He just cannot get to bed, despite Ruby's efforts to quiet his complaints about a fly, the noisy rain, and the bright moon. The touch-and-feel aspects of the book are sturdy with the exception of the lace curtain and blanket, which may tear off easily. A humorous, true-to-life bedtime story with the author's typical minimal sentences and delightful watercolor-and-ink illustrations.Olga R. Barnes,... |

PreSchool-Grade 1–Emily and her classmates are back, and children follow them throughout their kindergarten year through charming vignettes and enchanting illustrations. Each oversized spread offers a learning experience, whether readers are singing number songs with Emily and Diane Duck, making Valentine cakes with Emily and her mother, or hearing about the voting process. " 'We vote,' says Grandpa, 'in order to try and make more good things than bad things happen in our world.'" Miss Cribbage inspires her students to learn about the world around them in innovative ways. For example, the class creates a "Museum of Things" where they put tiny treasures or waylaid pieces into boxes that they label as animal, vegetable, or mineral. The corresponding photographs of the items against a stark white... |

PreSAMax is back, or at least retooled for the 21st century. Max's Ride and Max's Toys first appeared in 1979, while Max's Bath and Max's Bedtime both have a 1985 copyright. The texts for the most part read the same. The typeface has been changed from sans serif to serif. In Max's Ride, the concept words are now designed to reflect their meaning. So "down" now moves down the page and "under" dips under the line of text. Max's errant baby carriage hits a bump rather than a clothes basket. As for the illustrations, those bouncing baby bunny buns seem to have slipped south. Max is more of a dumpy pyramid shape with enormous feet and a softer contour line. The books are a bit larger and the color palette a tad lighter. Some of the facial expressions seem to give a different emotional emphasis. Purists may feel... |

It's off to dog-training class for everyone's favorite Westie in McDuff Goes to School by Rosemary Wells, illus. by Susan Jeffers. McDuff hits it off with the new neighbors' dog, Marie, but makes no points with Marie's French-speaking owners when he won't get off of their sofa; he is enrolled in school to learn basic commands. Readers get a few lessons, too, in the French words for sit, stay, come and heel along with a fun twist at the end. The artwork captures every nuance of the dogs' expressions. Book Review
There should be a law that requires every child to sit on Grandpa's knee as he chants "Trot, trot, to Boston; trot, trot, to Lynn." Grownups who still giggle at the thought of Little Jack Horner pulling a plum out of his Christmas pie, or who make a wish on a star, murmuring "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight" know the secret. They're the ones who will be handing down those same nursery rhymes to their own children, preserving an age-old tradition. But no child should be left behind. In world folklore authority Iona Opie's collection, these invaluable and ancient nuggets of childhood verse are bursting with new life. Quirky and sly, sweet, gentle, rollicking, silly... the range of rhymes is breathtaking. Winner of over a dozen prestigious awards, including a Parents' Choice Award and an ALA Notable... |
