Book Review
In a dark parking lot outside an amphitheater, crowds are gathering for tailgate parties. A young guitarist climbs up on the hood of a white pickup truck, pulls an old battered fedora down over his eyes, and begins to belt out "Night Train," a driving, electric song, while his brother works the crowd, selling tapes. The buskers are Daniel Friesen, 16-year-old blues man, and his 18-year-old brother Jens, a new--not used--car salesman. But Jens is more of an ex-salesman now, since he was fired two days ago. The pickup truck belongs to his ex-boss. These brothers are on the road and on the run, desperately trying to earn $5,000 to repay a shifty music producer. With them they carry not only guitars and amps, but a heavy load of love, resentment, and fury toward each other. When Jens discovers that Daniel drinks too much and... |

From Publishers Weekly
Full of action and dramatic tension, this story set in Canada reveals the problems of a high school hockey player during his first year on a Triple A team. A. J. Brandiosa's elation in making the Cyclones is undercut by the fear he will not measure up to the other players. The 17-year-old's hot temper and aggressiveness in the game soon bring him the wrong kind of notoriety. Trying to dispel his reputation for being a "bad boy" on the ice is not the only challenge A. J. faces. Even more difficult is his struggle to accept that his best friend and teammate, Tully Brown, is gay. After A. J.'s initial shock over this news wears off, the boy begins to question his own sexuality. Besides relating the dynamics of amateur hockey, Wieler ( Last Chance Summer ) explores the psychology of a confused adolescent trying to... |

Grade 7-10?With a blend of idealism and realism, superhero and knight RanVan begins his unplanned quest to defend good and defeat evil and unfairness. In "real life," high-school freshman Rhan plays video games, helps his grandmother manage an apartment complex, and attends school. After noting inequities such as the popular kids hazing freshmen and not allowing anyone else to sit at the cafeteria tables, as well as meeting Thalie, who has problems with her mother's boyfriend, Rhan stands up to defend the underdogs and becomes RanVan: The Defender. In doing so, he discovers that his real life often parallels the fantasy world of his video game, with unexpected twists and turns and, often, near destruction. In Worthy Opponent, the teen and his grandmother move across Canada. With a new video game to purchase... |

From Booklist
Ages 5^-8. Old Bailey, a wise and kindly mare, is loved by all the horses at the Rocky Mountain Stables except beautiful young Stocking--who doesn't miss a chance to remind Bailey of the ill fate that befalls old horses. When a new owner takes over the stables and promises big changes, Old Bailey knows her days are numbered. Her courageous decision to escape, and Stocking's surprising reaction, will leave readers cheering. Zhang's lovely acrylic illustrations provide a scenic backdrop of majestic mountains and peaceful countryside. The story starts rather slowly, but children who stick with it will be rewarded with a tale of unusual depth that raises some intriguing questions. With more text than the average picture book, this is also a good choice for youngsters making the transition to chapter books. Lauren... |
