Gr 2-5-Continuing the tales begun in her Sindbad (Tundra, 1999), Zeman retells another yarn from A Thousand and One Nights. Despite vows to stay put, the sailor finds the call of adventure too great and sets off on a disastrous voyage. Driven off course by cruel winds, he and his crewmates wash up on the terrifying Mountain of the Monkeys. From there, it's all downhill for the luckless crew-the men encounter a castle garnished with human bones, a terrible beast with eyes like fire and a taste for raw sailor, serpents and sea creatures, and more-will Sindbad ever escape? And how? The story only takes hapless readers so far, before promising more in a future book. Engagingly written, the story is fleshed out by Zeman's pencil, colored-pencil, and watercolor illustrations. Richly detailed, with intricate...

Grade 2-5-Combining incidents from the fifth and seventh voyages of the fabled merchant adventurer, Zeman concludes her trilogy of picture books. In Sindbad (1999) and Sindbad in the Land of Giants (2001, both Tundra), the intrepid seaman, armed with wit and bravery, survived terrifying monsters, endured lethal hardships, and returned to Baghdad with great wealth. Telling his last story to an impoverished porter, also named Sindbad, he now promises to reveal his greatest secret. He describes his escape from giant sea serpents and the murderous Old Man of the Sea, and his enslavement by ivory hunters who forced him to slaughter elephants. He spared a baby, and to reward him, the mother showed him an elephant graveyard, surely a lifetime supply of ivory. Yet his greatest treasure turns out to be the slave girl...

PreSchool-Grade 2. "The People," who appear to be a Native American tribe of the far north, are being destroyed by a cruel being, Iceheart, who freezes the land wherever they go. After a boy saves the life of a goose, the grateful Branta leads the people south, to a place where tall trees with shining red leaves offer warmth and protection. Iceheart attacks, tearing the leaves from the branches. Together, the boy and the goose bring back summer in the form of hundreds of birds that fill the tree, replacing the lost leaves and providing shelter. The goose says that winter will return, but that the birds and summer will follow each year. The author begins the story with an account of her family's escape from Czechoslovakia to safety in Canada. Her love for the security offered by the red maple leaf as a...

From Publishers Weekly
Zeman (The Last Quest of Gilgamesh) focuses primarily on the second voyage of Sindbad the Sailor for her retelling, which strikes the informal tone that Shahrazad might have adopted when she first relayed the adventures to King Shahriyar. But it's the illustrations that will carry the stories in readers' minds. Zeman sets the scene, explaining that Shahrazad told the 1,001 tales in order to save her life, but she pairs the information with a portrait of the king asleep on his bride's lap. In succeeding spreads, the artwork incorporates many motifs from Persian rugs: a border of exotic birds frames the meeting between Sindbad the Porter and Sindbad the Sailor; a background of hunters on horseback, foxes and prancing deer decorates the volume's most elegant painting, a portrait of the young Sindbad. A strong use of...
