Kindergarten-Grade 3-Hoshmakaka, an old, foolish, and proud camel, is chosen to carry the wise men's gifts to the baby Jesus. Reluctantly, he agrees and boasts to the younger camels that he has the strength of 10 horses. As he embarks on his journey, people along the way ask him to take their gifts. Goaded by the younger camels, he keeps adding to his load. A small child asks him to carry one last gift, a piece of straw for the baby's bed, and Hoshmakaka is brought to his knees by the weight. Jesus reaches out and touches him and "From that time on there was no burden, great or small, that Hoshmakaka would not gladly carry." The story is adapted from Thury's original libretto, performed by the Toronto Children's Chorus. Strikingly rich, detailed watercolors enrich the text. While the humbling message may be...

K-Gr 2--Three humorous stories, one of which is a version of Esphyr Slobodkina's well-known Caps for Sale (HarperCollins, 1947). Each tale is prefaced by a brief source note with useful bibliographical references. The stories are best read aloud, but their short and simplified style with occasional rhyming choruses lack narrative tension and a sense of setting. The watercolor illustrations show a delightful imagination in the monkeys, but the landscapes are flat and set against static white pages with an unvaried layout. While storytellers may find the notes useful, children will probably pass this title by.Nina Lindsay, Oakland Public Library, CACopyright 1999 Cahners Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

PreSchool-Grade 1-Three pleasing adaptations well suited to bedtime lap sharing. In the first offering, a traditional tale from Czechoslovakia, Bear and Pig sell snacks at the local market, but end up with full bellies and empty pockets. In the second selection, a North American Native legend, Bear steals the moon from the night sky. Finally, in a story from Russia, two lazy bears learn a lesson in housekeeping. The watercolor illustrations, with bold primary colors and simplified, rounded lines, fittingly balance the simple narrative style. The lack of source notes makes this collection more appropriate for the picture-book shelves than for the folktale section.Denise E. From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-This pourquoi story tells what happens when Mother Nature forgets to color the birds. As the plain, white creatures are brought to her attention, she dispatches some monkeys to decorate them. The birds let their imaginations go wild, asking for a variety of feathers, bills, beaks, and feet. As the paint runs dry, one tiny latecomer flies in. Disappointed with the drab brown color he's been given, the bird feels dull and unoriginal. But one monkey finds a last, special pot that contains a drop of gold, which transforms the plain bird into a golden-throated nightingale. Van Kampen's watercolor illustrations are vibrant and imaginative, full of color and action. She transforms a flock of nondescript avian creatures into the wide variety we know today. The book is a showcase for ...

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-One by one, seven huge, bumbling house guests drop in on a young dinophile and wreak havoc until she takes them firmly in hand. Though several unnatural breaks in line and cadence make the brief, rhyming text difficult to read smoothly, the illustrations have a cheery exuberance that will draw browsers like flies to honey. Van Kampen has created neatly limned pictures in which dinosaur posters, wallpaper, and stuffed animals-as well as the days of the week and the numbers from 1 to 7-are prominently featured. The dinos (all familiar types, named at the end of the book) are rendered in vivacious colors and sprawl across the double-page spreads with the looming, comic presence of Janet Stevens's animals. Guests and host gather round the grill on Sunday for hot dogs and hamburgers, served by a goateed...

Book Description
Each year, monarch butterflies embark on a fantastic journey across North America to a special place in Mexico's Oyamel Forest. This annual migration has fascinated scientists, butterfly-lovers and storytellers alike for years. So far, no one has been able to discover the reason for the monarch's tremendous flight. Vlasta van Kampen has always been fascinated by the flight of the monarch. This beautiful children's story illustrates the glory of the monarch butterfly and the strength and fortitude of its journey. Vlasta van Kampen is an internationally acclaimed illustrator. From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-Developed in conjunction with the Canadian TV show Crazy Quilt, this book features five short stories and craft projects that serve as story enhancements. "The Golden Goose" contains some basic elements of "The Princess Who Never Laughed," but in this version, the goose's owner, a young woodcutter, departs with a satisfying "Thank you" from the king, without any thought of marriage to the princess. The accompanying craft, like those for the other stories, uses paper, felt, cardboard tubes, and other easily obtainable materials. For the most part, the directions are for puppet characters that children (or adults) can use to retell the story or to invent new versions of it. In "My Messy Parents," a neatnik must deal with her childishly messy parents. In "The Mouse and the...
