One of Parenting Press's most popular books!
About the Author
If you're looking for theory and philosophy, you won't find it in Jan Faull's books and columns. No ivory-tower "expert", she learned about power struggles literally from the ground up--starting as the "nap room" teacher at a child-care center. She had earned a degree in English education at the University of Washington, but there were almost no teaching jobs in 1970, so Faull found herself working at a United Way-affiliated child care center in Portland. After years of managing child care centers and working in parenting education, Faull realized she could make a difference in children's lives by working through their parents. Fascinated by the topic, she returned to the University of Washington for a master's... |

From School Library Journal
PreS–A pleasant and fairly innocuous addition to an already crowded field, this rhymed book with reinforced pages uses color cartoon illustrations of a child of indeterminate gender who tries, with mixed results, to use the potty. The upbeat text employs expressions like That's okay! and Yeah! I really did it! If you already own Lara Jones's I Love My Potty (Scholastic, 2002) or Harriet Ziefert's Max's Potty and Sara's Potty (both DK, 1999; o.p.), you probably have enough on the subject. But if you need a new title (and remember, there's only so much that's possible in a book of this type), this one will serve its purpose.–Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. PreSchool-This set of gender-specific potty-training books is a cut above the rest in an already crowded field. Like Alyssa Satin Capucilli's The Potty Book for Boys and The Potty Book for Girls (both Barron's, 2000), their texts are identical, except for the gender references. "Michael is a boy just your age." "Ashley is a girl just your age." However, the direct, engaging language and questions aimed at young listeners make these titles far superior to Capucilli's singsong offerings. In both of Cole's titles, the parents buy a potty, encourage their child to use it, and eventually success is achieved. While the watercolor illustrations are not identical in the two books, they are very similar and add a cheerful, perky touch, portraying a boy/girl well into the toddler stage, surrounded by loving, smiling... |

Book Description
The time-tested, gentle, and successful method that introduces children to potty training as early as six months While parents around the world successfully potty train their children well before preschool age, in the United States, we've moved away from this early introduction. However, there's no evidence that later is better--in fact, there's even significant reason to believe that later can be detrimental. Written by a respected child psychologist, Early-Start Potty Training shows why the early-start method is preferable to the commonly used readiness method. Waiting until children show signs of readiness can hold them back from preschool, cost a fortune in diapers, and lead to health problems. The early-start method avoids these concerns by starting the process of training as early as six months old.... |

PreSchool-New entries in an already crowded field of books. These two are almost exact duplicates, both in text and illustration. The only differences are the names, Henry/Hannah; the addition or subtraction of a ponytail on the child's head; and the colors used-blue or pink, of course. A cutesy, rhymed text in the child's voice tells toddlers how Henry/Hannah receives his/her very own potty "to use when I am ready." Then the narrator goes on to relate how he/she sits on it, has success, and is rewarded with new underwear, not to mention the praise and applause of Mommy and Daddy. This is virtually the same plot as any other potty-training book aimed at this audience and their parents. Some have a tad more humor and imagination, like Wendy Lewison's The Princess & the Potty (S & S, 1994). Others are a bit... |

PreS. Here's an offering from the group that produced 11 books on parenting and child care for adults. This one is directed to potty trainees, though the subtext and the sidebars are for adults. The book begins with a several-page note advising parents that the training can last anywhere from two days to two years and pointing out how to tell when children are ready to begin the process. The text generally hits the mark in terms of packaging its information, but the tone veers between an almost cloying babyishness ("poo-poo goes bye-bye in the toilet") to more sophisticated sidebars for the "very curious" ("Why do boys have a penis and girls a vulva and vagina?"). The cartoon-style artwork is child-friendly, but it may not suit adults who are faint of heart. "Poo-poo" is tossed in the toilet, and "pee-pee" puddles on the... |
