Book Description
Is there evidence of children in the archaeological record? Some would answer no, that "subadults" can only be distinguished when there is osteological confirmation. Others might suggest that the reason children don't exist in prehistory is because no one has looked for them, much as no one had looked for women in the same context until recently. Focusing on the Southwest, contributors to this volume attempt to find some of those children, or at least show how they might be found. They address two issues: what was the cultural construction of childhood? and what were children's lives like? Determining how cultures with written records have constructed childhood in the past is hard enough, but the difficulty is magnified in the case of ancient Puebloan societies. The contributors here offer approaches from careful... |

Book Review
Everything about The Big Book of Dinosaurs is off the charts--the size of the book itself, the elaborate two-page spreads, the color models, and even the oversized type. Children can experience the amazing powers of these prehistoric beasts--the jagged teeth of the ferocious meat eaters, the slashing claws of the Deinonychus, and the long-necked Barosaurus that could reach five-story-high treetops and may have had eight hearts. Yet, like the dinosaurs themselves, there is nothing threatening or intimidating about this highly informative book. The text is brief and succinct, only conveying facts that children find interesting. (There's even an index for quick searches of favorite dinos.) The lifelike illustrations give young readers a solid sense of what dinosaur fossils and skeletal systems look like as well as clear... |

Book Review
"How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!" Every sleepy little dinosaur will recognize the tricks of the trade in these bedtime shenanigans. The chuckle factor is sky-high here, with giant, full-page pictures of cleverly identified Tyrannosaurus rexes, triceratopses, and Pteranodons. A variety of human mothers and fathers trying to put their dinosaur children to bed will bring the point home that the story may have something to do with human kid behavior as well. This... |

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4–Informational tidbits appear alongside exquisitely designed pop-up constructions in this visually stunning overview of all things dinosaur. Each spread features a spectacular paper sculpture of a particular species (e.g., Ankylosaurus or Triceratops) along with a brief paragraph of text. Smaller foldout sections, which open like miniature books and also incorporate pop-ups, cover additional topics (Dinosaur Detectives and Mystery Extinction) and introduce other dinosaurs and their characteristics. Rendered in warm earth tones and speckled with splashes of color, the three-dimensional creatures move with a life of their own as they gracefully extend their bodies into a full stretch or lurch toward readers with jaws open wide. PreSchool-Grade 2–Another addition to the humorous series that began with How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? (Scholastic, 2000). In the first part of the book, dinosaurs burp, belch, and display all kinds of other inappropriate behaviors during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Spinosaurus doesn't eat all his food...[he spits] out his broccoli partially chewed. Quetzalcoatlus fusses, fidgets, and squirms in his chair in a restaurant, while Amargasaurus flips his spaghetti high into the air. But, is this the way that dinosaurs should act? Of course not. So, a very genteel Cryolophosaurus says please and thank you while sitting very still, Lambeosaurus tries everything at least once, and Spinosaurus never drops anything onto the floor. In the last image, a very proper Cryolophosaurus–with pinky in the... |

Book Review
Sandra Boynton turns on the charm again in this story about a cuddly dino who refuses to go to bed until he (or she) has the right comfort object. A reflective silvery moon, some pull-out flaps, and a liftable bedspread with a reluctant hero hiding beneath it offer the very small reader a way into the story. The "Binkit" itself, a piece of soft yellow felt, can be stroked for reassurance. Reluctant bedtimers from one to three will enjoy this introduction to the idea of a bedtime routine that ends with comfort, closed eyes, and peace. (Baby to age 3)

Boynton's (Snoozers) signature style showcases a restless baby dinosaur who can't go to bed without his (or her) security blanket in this charming large-trim board book. Her rhyming text cajoles the little creature... |

One of the dinosaurs in the museum comes to life and spends the day with a young boy and his friends in Danny and the Dinosaur (HarperCollins, 1986). In Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur! (HarperCollins, 1995), the dinosaur is back to celebrate Danny's sixth birthday. The dinosaur welcomes a vacation when Danny and the Dinosaur Go to Camp (HarperCollins, 1996), and he doesn't seem to mind when all the kids and the camp counselor ride on his back after a tiring hike. Grade 4-7–In a WWF smack-down format, Johnson presents a series of colorful confrontations. After delineating a spectrum of era-based combat zones, she goes on to enumerate individual assets (strength, agility, armor, etc.) and rated danger levels (ranging from a paltry 2.7 for Scutellosaurus aka Studs to a high of 8.5 for Tyrannosaurus aka Rex). The featured matches span the ages from Permian predinosaurian Moschops vs. Lycaenops through a Jurassic Kentrosaurus vs. Allosaurus bout to a late Cretaceous battle between T. rex and Triceratops. In between these face-offs is a roster of would-be contenders, complete with realistic illustrations, vital statistics, distinguishing features, combat histories, and asset ratings. PreSchool-Grade 5–The exciting artistic presentation that worked so well in Actual Size (Houghton, 2004) is equally successful when applied to prehistoric creatures. Progressing chronologically from a dot-sized protozoan of 550 million years ago, Jenkins has chosen the animals and the portions of them to depict to great effect. Cut- and torn-paper figures reveal texture and delicate details, from the long wings of an early dragonfly to the feathered tuft of an eight-foot terror bird. A three-inch spiny shark stands out distinctly against a page of white space, while less than half of a giant millipede barely fits across two pages. A series of foldout pages reveals one complete small dinosaur (Saltopus), the impressive beak and head of a flying reptile (Dsungaripterus), and the thick claw of a... |

Book Review
Jean Auel's fifth novel about Ayla, the Cro-Magnon cavewoman raised by Neanderthals, is the biggest comeback bestseller in Book Review history. In The Shelters of Stone, Ayla meets the Zelandonii tribe of Jondalar, the Cro-Magnon hunk she rescued from Baby, her pet lion. Ayla is pregnant. How will Jondalar's mom react? Or his bitchy jilted fiancée? Ayla wows her future in-laws by striking fire from flint and taming a wild wolf. But most regard her Neanderthal adoptive Clan as subhuman "flatheads." Clan larynxes can't quite manage language, and Ayla must convince the Zelandonii that Clan sign language isn't just arm-flapping. Zelandonii and Clan are skirmishing, and those who interbreed are deemed "abominations." What would Jondalar's tribe think if they knew Ayla had to abandon her half-breed son in Clan country? The... |

Grade 4-6-On the verge of the ceremony that will initiate him into manhood, young Dar, a Cro-Magnon boy, faces the conflicts in his life: his demanding uncle who has no tolerance for his nephew's desire to carve, his grandmother's growing frailty, and his own fears. When he wanders farther than usual one day to check some snares, he meets a man from a different tribe. The man, Toreg, has a device that enhances the distance he can throw his spear. Determined to trade for it, Dar leaves his tribe and begins a journey that will change life for his entire clan. The plot moves swiftly and there is sufficient character development to maintain readers' interest. The historical detail is accurate, and the setting clearly described. Cowley's narrative reads aloud well, and could certainly be used as an introduction... |
