Book Description

Joe Grey can't believe his human housemate Clyde would even consider volunteering him for the Animal Therapy program at the local nursing home, just when Joe was on the verge of solving the string of burglaries that has Molena Point residents shaking in their collective boots. But it turns out it's Dulcie, Joe's pretty little cat-friend, who came up with the idea of subjecting Joe to the cooing attentions of a bunch of doddering old coots. Dulcie believes there's more going on at the old folks' home than the care and feeding of lonely seniors. And she needs Joe's help in getting to the bottom of a conspiracy ... and a very suspicious set of deaths.

Cat Raise the Dead: A Joe Grey Mystery

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The third in a charming series of cat fantasy-mysteries featuring Joe Grey, a tomcat who discovers, to his dismay, that he can speak — with humans!

Readers will adore this new installment by Shirley Rousseau Murphy — a treat for fantasy, cat and mystery lovers every-where. Joe Grey was, well, peeved. His human housemate Clyde was trying to volunteer him as a once-a-week Animal Therapy cuddle kitty. And just when Joe was about to nab the cat burglar who was terrifying the coast from Half Moon Bay to Moien Point! But it wasn't up to Joe or Clyde. The "pet-a-pet" scheme was Dulcie's idea, and she was a cat who always got her way. Dulcie needed Joe's help to prove that the old folks' home was hiding more than just lonely seniors. There was a mysterious kidnapper, a severed finger and a very, very busy open grave!

FROM THE CRITICS

VOYA - Marsha Valance

Murphy offers another enjoyable light adventure of her feline sleuths, Joe Grey and Dulcie, residents of a beautiful seaside village in California. The intrepid cats, who are always half-a-dozen crime-stopping steps ahead of their human housemates, are involved in two investigations: stopping a daylight "cat-burglar" and solving several mysterious disappearances at an old folks' home. As usual, Dulcie is the chief investigator. Intrigued by the confidences of an elderly woman in the home, Dulcie smuggles Joe into the building through the Pet-a-Pet program to help her locate several of the residents who have been moved to a locked wing and have not communicated with their friends or relations. Joe is more concerned with stopping the cat-burglar, whom he feels is misappropriating the good name of his species. When the cases collide, Joe is in place to prevent the last in a series of mysterious deaths. The charming village of Molena Point, the well-differentiated characters of the residents, and the well-developed plot call to mind the traditional English village cozy, with the cats substituted for the equally traditional nosy spinster detective. Fans of cats, nonviolent mysteries, or both will grab this off the shelf enthusiastically. Junior and senior high libraries should consider for purchase. VOYA Codes: 4Q 4P J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Broad general YA appeal, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
