FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Norah Piehl
Adrift and alone after his mentor Fenwyck is executed for thieving from the king's palace, Corwin spends his days gathering shells and selling them to the local button-maker. When one particularly unusual shell comes into his possession, Corwin has no idea that the lovely shell hides a creature that will change his fate. Soon he finds himself inexplicably connected not only with this mysterious sea creature, but also with Nia, a mermyd, who claims to be from the lost civilization of Atlantis. These three must outwit not only the king's men but also the evil mermyd king, and the fate that befalls one of the three will await the other two as well. This second volume of a trilogy stands alone adequately, but readers unfamiliar with the first tale in the series may get bogged down in the lengthy exposition and somewhat confusing mermyd mythology. The plot moves along steadily, although the revelations exposed in the epilogue seem somewhat abrupt after a cleanly plotted climax. Although the occasional references to historical figures and to quasi-Arthurian myths are somewhat jarring in this tale that's otherwise pure fantasy, readers will nevertheless be eager to discover how the story's cliffhangers will be resolved in the final volume of the trilogy. Part of the "Water" trilogy. 2002, Avon Books,
KLIATT - Middle School Reading Teacher
In this sequel to Ascension (reviewed in KLIATT in May 2002), Nia, of the Blue Fin Clan, must seek the lost Farworlder prince on whom her life is dependent; if she doesn't find him within seven days they both will die. Complicating the matter is Corwin, a young boy who has found the prince and has also been given the mark of an Avatar. Corwin, ill with poison from the prince, seeks help from a blind button maker. While there he meets Nia and joins forces with her to rescue the prince, taken from him by King Vortimer's sons. Their journey takes them under the castle into old Roman viaducts and cisterns. Unfortunately Ma'el, the evil Avatar, and his Farworlder king are also looking for the prince. A battle ensues and at least one old friend dies. At the conclusion of this episode Corwin must decide if he is willing to go to Atlantis with Nia and the Farworlder prince, Gobaith, to see if there is anyone still alive. Any library that has the first book should purchase this book, and both should be purchased for any library that does not have either. My students and I love this series and eagerly await the conclusion. The books do need to be read in order, but as there are only three, it shouldn't be overwhelming. This book will appeal to girls who love Ella Enchanted and other fairy tales, particularly Donna Napoli's Sirena. Stacey Conrad, (Water, Bk. 2)..
