Purpose: The purpose is to educate and provide an overview of substance abuse and addiction treatment for any clinician. The authors identify addiction as an extensive public health problem. They discuss the disparity between the numbers seeking addiction treatment and the accessibility of available addiction treatment providers. The authors also humanize the subject to address attitudinal barriers. Audience: This book is written for the non-addiction clinician in a variety of practice settings. The author provides a credible overview and humane approach to substance abuse and addiction treatment. Features: The nature of addictive disease is described by taking a historical approach to examine the evolving paradigms of addiction and addiction treatment. Pharmacology of addictive substances, addiction and the human brain, behavioral therapies, screening and diagnosing, and interventions with special populations are discussed. Appropriate references for more detailed information are presented at the end of each chapter. The authors are at times overzealous in the treatment interventions discussed. The book would benefit by illustrating common screening tools that could be widely used by clinicians of variable skill levels. The text is in narrative style with few highlights that could make the material less readily accessible and user friendly. Some of the drug information could have been formatted in tables for quick and easy reference. The conundrum of chronic pain and addiction was inadequately discussed despite its high prevalence. Assessment: The historical perspective offered makes this an enjoyable read for the experienced substance abuse professional. Although the book is written for the general clinician, at times it appears overzealous in its recommendations and bypasses some basic how-to information and simple screening tools. The premise of making treatment more readily available and the humane explanations by the authors is much needed.
