Review
"The book is divided into chapters, each of which reviews major psychiatric topics that students are expected to master during their clerkship. Topics are listed under bold headings, with essential information below. Outside margins contain mnemonics, diagrams, exam tips, and other memory aids." "A thorough index is found at the end. A Folstein Mini Mental State Exam is provided on a removable card, another nice feature. " "As Director of Medical Student Education for my department, I was interested in the appropriateness of this study guide. I showed it to a superior student who had recently completed her core psychiatry rotation, and her overall opinion was positive, as was mine. We both agreed that charts and tables would be an improvement. This study guide would greatly benefit students in their psychiatry rotation, and I plan on recommending it to my students. " "4 Stars!"

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: William Miles, MD (Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center)Description: This paperback book is one of several in the First Aid series, designed as a study guide for medical students during their clerkships. This version is written specifically for the psychiatry core clerkship. Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a study guide for medical students during their psychiatry clerkship. Many such study guides are available, and the First Aid series is one of the better known. Audience: The book is specifically written for third and fourth year medical students on a psychiatry rotation. Others, such as psychiatric nurses and even residents, may find it a useful resource. It is written by medical students and resident physicians. Features: The book is divided into chapters, each of which reviews major psychiatric topics that students are expected to master during their clerkship. Topics are listed under bold headings, with essential information below. Outside margins contain mnemonics, diagrams, exam tips, and other memory aids. There are no charts or tables; this is one of the book￯﾿ᄑs shortcomings. A chart comparing and contrasting closely related disorders such as bipolar type I and type II, for example, would have been beneficial. No references are provided. A thorough index is found at the end. A Folstein Mini Mental State Exam is provided on a removable card, another nice feature. Assessment: As Director of Medical Student Education for my department, I was interested in the appropriateness of this study guide. I showed it to a superior student who had recently completed her core psychiatry rotation, and her overall opinion was positive, as was mine. We both agreed that charts and tables would be an improvement. This study guide would greatly benefit students in their psychiatry rotation, and I plan on recommending it to my students.
