FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Alvin Telser, PhD (Northwestern University Medical School)Description: This is the 10th edition of a textbook of histology that includes a CD-ROM with the images found in the book. It is a long time member of the series of Lange Review texts now published by McGraw-Hill. The 9th edition was published in 1998. Purpose: The authors state that the book is a "concise" text and atlas of basic histology. The previous edition was just under 500 pages and this edition is just over 500 pages. However, this edition is 8.5" x 11" where the 9th edition was 7" x 10", so the conciseness is arguable. It would seem that this book has become more of a standard textbook of histology than it used to be. Nonetheless, it is a reasonably well done textbook of histology and, as such, the authors have achieved their objectives.Audience: The book is written mainly for students in professional schools but it would be useful as a reference for many undergraduate courses that touch on the subject. The authors are knowledgeable in the field, having published the first nine editions of this book.Features: The major difference between this edition and previous editions is the fact that all the micrographs and figures are now in color. Although this would appear to be an improvement, I found most of the micrographs to be of medium to poor quality. The color rendition of nearly all the light micrographs is poor. The authors appear to have a few favorite stains that are not in common usage; furthermore, these stains don't add significant visual information beyond more standard stains. A brief glossary ofstains used would be helpful to the nonexpert. It is not clear what the authors consider the "atlas" component to be; this book has many color images just as any other histology textbook has. The CD-ROM is difficult to use and the images that can be copied from the disc are of very poor quality. The "Help" feature of the CD-ROM was no help in this regard. Assessment: In its previous editions, this book has been useful and popular. The "upgrade" of this edition to full color has, in fact, been a step backwards. Other books, such as Ross et al.'s Histology: A Text and Atlas, 4th Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2003), and the histology books by Gartner and Hiatt are superior. There are also many excellent atlases of histology, the most notable of which is Atlas of Functional Histology by Kerr (Mosby, 1999). Students and faculty would be well advised to look elsewhere for a modern text and atlas of histology.
