FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Jay Goldsmith, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)Description: This is the fifth edition of a paperback book that serves as quick guide to diagnosis and treatment of neonatal disorders. The book is organized in an outline format and will prove useful to the clinician working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This is an update of the 1998 version.Purpose: The purpose is to provide a streamlined pocket reference for healthcare providers working in neonatology units. The book is multiauthored and meets the editor's goal of providing an authoritative handy bedside reference readily accessible to the practitioner.Audience: The book is aimed at NICU practitioners: students, NNP's, residents, fellows, and attendings. Most of the contributors are well known, credible authorities in the field.Features: This is a brief but comprehensive book covering most areas of neonatology. The format lends itself best to the on-call problems section and least well to management of complex issues. The on-call problem section is a unique and outstanding feature of the book. The section on procedures is limited by the size of the book with few illustrations; for this information, practitioners would be better served by books such as Atlas of Procedures in Neonatology, 3rd edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2002), by MacDonald and Ramasethu. The pharmacology section is up-to-date and very helpful to the clinician.Assessment: This is an excellent bedside reference which is easy to use and comprehensive. This edition has been updated and strives to keep pace with this quickly changing specialty. It is obviously more practical (less expensive) than the standard neonatal textbooks, but more informative and comprehensive than other paperback manuals (i.e., Merenstein and Gardner's Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care, 5th edition (Mosby, 2002)).
