FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Alexander Karmazin, MD (Children's Mercy Hospital)Description: This is a comprehensive yet concise general pediatrics book aimed at a wide audience, ranging from the medical student to the practicing pediatrician. The 44 chapters are well organized, generally by pediatric subspecialty. The book is regularly updated every two years.Purpose: The objective is to provide a guide to diagnosis, understanding, and treatment of the medical problems of all pediatric patients in an easy-to-use and readable format. The objectives are worthy, but one should keep in mind that many general pediatric book are available, published in a variety of styles and organizational formats. This book will be particularly helpful for those readers who appreciate a table format to compare and contrast diagnostic features and findings but do not depend highly on pictures or photographs for learning.Audience: According to the editors, the book is intended for a wide audience. Students and residents are likely to find it a helpful reference for the general pediatric rotations. Family practitioners and pediatricians however, may find it somewhat incomplete in its treatment of specific diagnoses. Most of the contributing authors hold academic appointments at the University of Colorado and The Children's Hospital in Denver. Features: The book aims to provide a brief discussion of pediatrics. Chapters are broken down by body system (cardiovascular, skin, orthopedics), developmental stage (newborn, infant, adolescent), or global area (substance abuse, emergencies, and injuries). An especially useful feature is a summary of specific diagnoseslisted in a section termed "Essentials of Diagnosis & Typical Features" prior to a more in-depth description. The book generally flows smoothly and tables are plentiful. The table of contents and the index are well placed and easy to access. Photographs, however, are nearly nonexistent and their absence makes the understanding of a chapter such as the skin more difficult than it should be. Another shortcoming, specific to the endocrinology chapter, involves the use two incorrect enzyme names (most likely proofreading errors) and an incorrect statement regarding the most common cause of pseudoprecocious puberty in girls.Assessment: Overall, this book provides a helpful discussion of most pediatric diagnoses, their features, and treatment. Because there are a number of pediatrics books, your choice will most likely be determined by your learning style. If you learn and remember best by association of visual images with written text, this book may not be your best choice. If, however, you strongly prefer the use of tables to differentiate similar diagnoses, drugs, and etiologies of findings, then this book should provide a useful and enjoyable reference. The book is updated biennially but should provide "current" information even once a new edition is published. Similar books are published every four to five years.
