FROM THE CRITICS

Gr 5-8-This ageless classic presents readers with a number of adult-world absurdities via a child's planet-hopping adventure. Through the words of an omniscient narrator, the Little Prince recalls a number of puzzling encounters with adults. On the first planet, the Little Prince meets a king in such dire need of loyalty that he only gives orders he knows will be followed. On another planet, he describes a businessman who constantly counts the stars, which he proudly claims as his, since they belong to no one else. Later, he meets a geographer who is much too important to leave his office and relies on explorers to describe the world to him. By recounting his adventures to our narrator, the Little Prince attempts to highlight the importance of the moment and finding beauty in nature. Thoughtful readers will appreciate the story's messages and will reflect on life while reading it. The author's original ink and watercolor sketches are carefully placed throughout, providing support for struggling readers. The translated text is true to the original and very readable. This gem should be in every bookstore, public library, and middle school collection.
