Gunning's (Central Connecticut State U.) aim is to provide sufficient background knowledge of teaching methods, children's books, and other materials to enable a teacher to create effective instruction for the entire range of children he/she teaches. The fourth edition is larger in format than previous editions, and has a full color interior. Additional changes include a focus on guided reading and matching readers with appropriate texts, additional model teaching lessons, more information on leveling texts, expansion of the list of leveled books from 500 to 1,000 texts, greater emphasis on working with at-risk students and English language learners, increased coverage of technology, and extensive coverage of the latest basals.
