Catalogue of an exhibition organized by the Harvard University Art Museums in May, 1999. In her essay, Mitchell (intern in the Fogg Museum's Department of Prints) demonstrates that public executions in the 18th century were akin to theatrical performances that attracted huge crowds from all strata of Georgian society and encouraged vocal and gestural response. The 41 b&w reproductions of Hogarth's prints reveal the popular printmaker's flair for capturing the public's response to performance. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
