Based on interviews with Travellers and others between 1990 and 1993, documentary research, and a small taste of observation and participation at festivals in the west of England, Hetherington (sociology, Brunei U.) explores the history and lifestyle of New Age Travellers. Characterizing the phenomenon as part alternative lifestyle, part youth subculture, and part new social movement that has been renewing itself since the 1970s, he discusses blank figures in the countryside, free festivals, life on the road, ethnicity, visions of England, Stonehenge, and panic morals.
