FROM THE PUBLISHER

With 215 Million copies of her thirty-two novels in print worldwide, author Danielle Steele is an international household name. While readers have loved her books, few have known anything about the woman behind them - until now. Vickie L. Bane and Lorenzo Benet, both People magazine correspondents, relate the surprising and electrifying tale of a fascinating woman who has endured more dark and stormy episodes in her rise to celebrity and fortune than most of her own heroines. Raised in New York City, Danielle grew up solitary, lonely, and in ill health. At eighteen, she married a wealthy banker and shuttled between Manhattan, San Francisco, and Paris. After the marriage dissolved, she married men of a different stripe - first a convicted rapist and then a recovering heroin addict. Her rocky road to happiness led her through a third divorce, a bitter custody battle, and finally to what looks like a picture-perfect existence. Today she lives with her fourth husband as a devoted wife, mother of seven, a Christian Scientist - and a multimillionaire author.

FROM THE CRITICS

BookList - Ilene Cooper

Forget her fiction; Danielle Steel's life puts any novel to shame. Born a poor little rich girl whose parents disdained her, Steel went on to marry a society fellow, followed by an ex-con with whom she had a romance while he was still a prisoner. Number three in the lineup of husbands was a drug addict, but Steel, like one of her heroines, found another society type to bat in the cleanup position, only this time a more suitable one. Money, best-sellers, nine kids, and plenty of happily-ever-aftering followed apace. This "unauthorized" account of Steel's storybook life offers a fairly straightforward recitation of events, but the authors, both staff reporters at "People", are pretty good with the dish, and Steel doesn't escape unscathed. (Only the con and the druggie, among Steel's husbands, agreed to talk, which may explain the somewhat skewed perspective.) Without access to Steel herself, or to most of her family members, the story occasionally gets a little thin, leaving the authors to spend much of their time quoting from Steel's books and comparing fiction and fact. This works best if you've read the books, and since there are several million fans out there who have done just that, there shouldn't be any problem drumming up an audience. In fact, Steel's life has enough glamour, excitement, and heartache to interest even those who haven't read her books.
