FROM THE CRITICS

Booknews

A reference to the life and work of French novelist Flaubert (1821- 80), who Porter (French, comparative literature, and African studies, Michigan State U.) says has been one of the most influential forces behind realist, naturalist, modernist, and postmodernist schools of literature throughout Europe and the Western Hemisphere. The contributors, US scholars, focus on his literary works, their sources, and their influence but also include discussions of places, contemporary events, a few well known critics, characters that make several appearances, and some of the writers who influenced or were influenced by him. Bibliographic references are entry specific. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
