FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Alfonso Mejia, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This fifth edition continues the tradition started in 1978 of covering all the intricacies of injury-specific rehabilitation of the hand and upper extremity and adds 18 new chapters not included in the previous edition published in 1995. Purpose: The book begins with an overview of anatomy and evaluation and then launches into the specific management of individual hand and upper extremity problems. The book arranges conditions into 25 sections, such as infection, the rural injuries and generic conditions allowing the reader to focus on specific problems in depth.Audience: The book is directed at all health professionals involved with the care of hand and upper extremity conditions. For physicians, this book helps them understand the intricacies of therapy, which helps complete the journey begun in the operating room. For therapists, the book has an overview of surgical treatment to allow them to understand what intervention a patient has undergone.Features: This book covers the breadth of hand and upper extremity conditions in detail. The text is abundantly augmented with clear diagrams and photographs. Each chapter has an extensive reference list that includes classic through current articles. The index is very easy to use. The size of this large book makes it more appropriate for library use than as handy reference, but that is unavoidable when covering a broad topic.Assessment: Along with the 18 new chapters, this edition has 53 completely rewritten chapters. This is a well-written, informative look atdiagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of upper extremity conditions. It offers one of the best descriptions of upper extremity therapy available.
