Reviewer: Joan C. Murphy, EdD, MS, RN, NP (Utica College of Syracuse University)Description: This is the fourth edition of the "little red book," now presented in 8-inch by 5-inch spiral bound, soft cover format. It has served as a handbook for documentation and reimbursement over the last decade for nurses and other clinicians in home care. The previous edition was published in 1998. Purpose: Throughout the editions, the purpose has remained constant: to provide information and tools for new and experienced home care nurses and other clinicians to better the quality, documentation and reimbursement for home healthcare services. Audience: The experienced author has met her purpose and the book is a timely reference for the practitioner. This edition has been reviewed by a large national team of experts from diverse healthcare settings. This handbook is valuable for students, educators, and administrators in addition to nurses and other clinicians in home healthcare. Features: Changes in this edition reflect those of the past decade, but especially since 1998. Special attention is given to the system-based model to reflect the Medicare prospective payment system based on the 80 home health resource groups. The fourth part of the book has always been the most heavily used, containing as it does the clinical guidelines. This section now contains 25 care guidelines: 12 adult medical-surgical, 12 maternal-child, and one hospice and palliative care guideline. The 12 sections of the book present information and tools key to current practice, such as Medicare home care guidelines, reimbursement guidelines, nursing diagnoses, guidelines for durable equipment, and the ICD-9-CM codes. There are many other resources listed. The index enables easy use of the book. Assessment: Home care nurses and other home care clinicians are on the front line of healthcare, directly responsible for keeping the balance between quality healthcare and fiscal responsibility. The patients and their families, as well as the agencies, depend on their ability to do so, often under very challenging circumstances. This current edition is a necessity for those practitioners. The "little red book" is a necessary companion!
