From Book News, Inc.
Brandon-Hill cites the fifth edition as an "initial purchase" and as part of its "minimal core list"; this sixth edition is the first undertaken without the guidance of founding editor Middleton (d. 1998) and his two senior co-editors, who initiated the original work in 1978. As in previous editions, the first of the two volumes is devoted to scientific underpinnings--immunology, aerobiology and diagnosis, physiology, and pharmacology; the second to clinical science. The new edition maintains the focus on human immunobiology and medicine, although pertinent animal experimentation is not ignored. Among the topics treated in 10 new chapters: signal transduction events, antigen processing pathways, biology of airway smooth muscle cells, apoptosis of inflammatory cells, and animal models of asthma. A CD-ROM version of the text is included.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
