Clinicians' Guide to Sleep Medicine

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Melany Danehy, MD (Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center)Description: This book provides both a general overview of sleep medicine and a detailed examination of the clinical approach to sleepiness, insomnia, and other very common complaints. The attention to the relationship of medical conditions to sleep is also unique. Purpose: The author￯﾿ᄑs stated purpose is to provide a concise but thorough explanation of sleep disorders. The book goes beyond this aim and gives clinical details of the evaluation and examination, which other books may not include. The reader is rewarded for choosing this book over others with the same, well covered purpose. Audience: The book is written for practicing clinicians, both specialists and generalists. It is true that the depth of coverage is not necessary for the medical student, resident, or staff in a sleep lab. However, the particular attention to clinical evaluation would benefit any of these latter groups. The author is a professor and director of the Scottish National Sleep Laboratory. Features: The book includes more than the usual basic information about sleep. It covers the basics and the two main disorders:obstructive sleep apnea/hypoapnea syndrome and narcolepsy ￯﾿ᄑ in the first three chapters. Well organized subcategories for each of these disorders add to the readability of the book. From my perspective, the two chapters on investigating the sleepy patient and insomnia are the most useful. The summary tables, bullet points and ￯﾿ᄑuseful reviews￯﾿ᄑ sections that are part of each topic are extremely helpful. A lack of illustrations is barely noticeable due to the format and the use of contrasting color to highlight important points. The chapters on COPD, nocturnal asthma, and other common medical disorders make this book very useful for a variety of practitioners. Assessment: This thorough yet compact review of sleep basics is useful. The book stands out from others because of its organized format, attention to clinical detail, and inclusion of chapters on medical topics infrequently addressed. I would recommend this book to physicians in any area who are interested in how sleep medicine interacts with their specialty.
