FROM THE CRITICS
Susanna A. McColley
This book offers an extensive review of cystic fibrosis, including chapters on both clinical and basic science. Its primary emphasis is on diagnosis and management of cystic fibrosis and its complications. It presents up-to-date information and is extensively referenced. The purpose is to provide basic scientists with a detailed description of the clinical features of the disorder and to provide practitioners with up-to-date information regarding both basic science and clinical advances in the field. Another goal is to provide this information to paramedical personnel working with cystic fibrosis patients. These are worthy objectives and are largely met. The book will be of interest to basic scientists, physicians, and paramedical personnel involved in the study and care of patients with cystic fibrosis. The authors come from several countries and thus offer a global view of cystic fibrosis care that is pertinent to all geographic settings. Illustrations and tables are generally high quality and appropriate. Some chapters, especially those covering basic science topics, would benefit from additional tables or diagrams. There is some overlap between chapters; for example, three different chapters have tables describing antibiotics. The table of contents and index guide the reader well. This book offers a comprehensive review of cystic fibrosis. It is especially welcome given the many exciting recent advances in basic and clinical science. It will be an important addition to the libraries of institutions that study or treat patients with cystic fibrosis and to the personal libraries of physicians and paramedical personnel who care for these patients.
