Doody Review Services
Reviewer: Robert M. Arensman, MD (Children's Memorial Hospital)Description: This is a complete book on pediatric surgical problems that involve the liver, pancreas, or biliary ducts with a large number of pictures, drawings, charts and graphs, plus an extensive list of references. This second edition adds considerable information on newer diagnostic modalities, improved pathological diagnoses and classifications, transplantation, and information on long-term outcomes.Purpose: Consistent with the purpose of the first edition, the authors have attempted to present complete and relevant information concerning hepatobiliary disease in children, updated over the 10 years since the first publication. The authors indicate that the large number of innovations over this time period (better understanding of anatomy, transplantation advances, laparoscopic advances, etc) necessitate a complete revision of the book, a task the authors have nicely achieved.Audience: The authors hope that this book will assist physicians, surgeons, and members of multidisciplinary teams caring for these children. However, they also address it to "colleagues who treat adults...since they will be caring for an increasing number of our patients in the future." The book is clearly written for an advanced audience and edited by three pediatric surgeons whose reputations are well established in this area of practice.Features: The content is divided into eight parts containing 37 chapters. After introductory information on anatomy and perioperative management, the remainder of the chapters cover individual pathological problems of the pancreas orbiliary tract with four sections devoted to hepatic tumors, hypertension, infection and trauma, and transplantation. All standard information is provided in a consistent and repeated format with a large number of illustrative drawings, photographs, and radiographs. In addition, there are 18 well-reproduced color photographs in the center of the book that further illustrate the text.Assessment: This second edition admirably achieves its purpose of providing a current, authoritative book focusing on the problems associated with liver, pancreas, and bile ducts as seen in childhood. It will serve as a definitive reference for several years until newer information and technological advances necessitate a further edition.
