Library Journal
The Queen's privateer, the dashing and handsome Sir Nicholas Beauvallet, is in the midst of plundering a Spanish ship and setting her captain adrift in a longboat when he is stopped in his tracks by the sight of a beautiful young woman (all ivory, rose, and ebony), Do a Dominica de Rada y Sylva, who curses him roundly as a scoundrel and a poltroon. She is taken prisoner, along with her ailing father, but since Sir Nicholas is really our hero, he gallantly escorts them to Spain where he sets them ashore despite the Spanish navy and the Inquisition. Heyer departs from her usual Regency time period with a rousing tale set during the reign of Elizabeth I. Cornelius Garrett is a wonderful reader, and the listener has an easy time visualizing a laughing Sir Nicholas with his pointed beard, earring, slashed doublet, and gleaming sword. Great fun; highly recommended for all libraries.-Barbara A. Perkins, Irving P.L., TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
