From Library Journal
Dr. Mathilde Krim, who wrote the introduction, and AmFAR are both trusted names in the field of AIDS, and both have put their name to Ward's new handbook. Ward, a senior medical writer for the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State University and author of The Cancer Handbook (Ohio State Univ., 1995), has written this text mainly for those with HIV/AIDS but also for public health workers, counselors, family members, and others who deal with HIV-related illness. He takes scientific concepts and brings them down to a lay level without making them simplistic. The book has three main sections: basic information about HIV/ AIDS; medical information on cells, the immune system, viruses, genes, and the history of AIDS; and a glossary and appendixes on where to get more information on the disease and its 1993 classification systems. An important resource; recommended for public and medical libraries.-?Lee Arnold, Historical Soc. of Pennsylvania, PhiladelphiaCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Book News, Inc.
Offers a detailed yet readable explanation of the complexities of HIV/AIDS and how treatment decisions are made, for people with HIV and their families and loved ones. Section I presents topics of medical interest, with chapters on testing, transmission, treatment, and prevention, as well as vaccine development and ways to maintain quality of life. Section II explores scientific evidence underlying material in Section I. Section III offers a glossary and appendices on using scientific literature. Also useful for public health workers and others who provide ancillary services to people with HIV. Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR

Publishers Weekly, 19 October 1998
With such a wealth of rhetoric and misinformation out there, a guide such as this is long overdue.

Feminist Bookstore News, October 1998
Though its mainstream approach has put off some activists, this long-time research and education group has produced a comprehensive treatment guide intended for diverse audiences.

Book Description
From the leading foundation for AIDS research, a comprehensive guide to help readers understand the complexities of HIV/AIDS and provide the latest information on combination therapy. The AmFAR AIDS Handbook picks up where other books on AIDS leave off. It is the book you will turn to for a greater understanding of this disease, its causes and effects, and what new treatment options are being developed. How is HIV transmitted? When should antiviral treatment begin? Should treatment ever be stopped? How do protease inhibitors work? How does the disease differ in men, women, and children? This guide incorporates the latest research findings-including those on combination drug therapy-and answers all your questions in language comprehensible to nonscientists. AmFAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research) is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of laboratory and clinical research on AIDS, AIDS prevention, and advocacy for sound AIDS-related public policy. It has given out over $140 million to more than 1700 research teams. Elizabeth Taylor is the founding national chairman and Dr. Mathilde Krim is the founding co-chair and chairman of the board.
