Book Description
The first reader to cover the scope of oppressions in America, Readings for Diversity and Social Justice covers six thematic issues: racism, sexism, Anti-Semitism, heterosexism, classism and ableism. The Reader contains a mix of short personal and theoretical essays as well as entries designed to challenge students to take action to end oppressive behavior and to affirm diversity and racial justice. Each thematic section is broken down into three divisions: Contexts; Personal Voices; and Next Steps and Action. The selections include over 90 essays from some of the foremost names in the field-bell hooks, Cornel West, Michael Omi, Iris Marion Young, Gloria Anzaldua, Michelle Fine, Gloria Steinem, Richard Rodriguez, Beverly Daniel Tatum, Michael Kimmel, Patricia Hill Collins and many other distinguished scholars.


About the Author
Maurianne Adams is Chair of the Social Justice in Education Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her previous works include Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice (Routledge 1997) and Strangers and Neighbors (1999).
Warren J. Blumenfeld's previous works include Homophobia: How We All Pay the Price (1992) and Looking at Gay and Lesbian Life (1993).
Ximena Zuniga is Lecturer in the Social Justice Education Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and co-editor of Multicultural Teaching in the University (1995).
Rosie Castaneda, Heather W. Hackman, and Madeline L. Peters are all at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The first reader to cover the scope of oppressions in America, Readings for Diversity and Social Justice will cover the six "isms": racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, heterosexism, classism and ableism.
